Seeking Advice, International Student Recruiting Dilemma
Hi Guys, for this upcoming summer I secured a summer internship at a consulting firm. Problem is this firm does not sponsor international student, so return offers are not possible. Admittedly, the consulting firm is not that good but still quite established regardless. A few days ago, I received another offer from a large PE firm, but it is a back office role (operations/compliance). They will sponsor me and I can receive return offer after graduation. I do want to pursue consulting but the visa issue has always been a big concern to me, especially realizing how few consulting firms actually sponsor. Should I reneg and take the PE offer so at least I have a safety option of staying in the US? Is it still possible for me to recruit for consulting after spending my junior summer in a back office role? Thank you!
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to consider:
Visa Sponsorship Priority: Given your situation as an international student, securing a position that offers visa sponsorship is crucial. This not only ensures your ability to work in the U.S. post-graduation but also provides a level of job security that is hard to overlook.
Long-term Career Goals vs. Immediate Opportunity: While the consulting role aligns more closely with your career aspirations, the lack of sponsorship is a significant risk. The PE firm's offer, although in a back office role, provides sponsorship and a potential pathway to remain in the U.S. This could serve as a strategic stepping stone, even if it's not directly aligned with your ultimate career goals.
Transitioning from Back Office to Front Office or Consulting: Transitioning from a back office role to a consulting position can be challenging but not impossible. It would require strategic networking, possibly additional qualifications or certifications, and a strong performance record. You would need to be proactive in seeking opportunities within the firm or externally that align more closely with consulting.
Reneging Consequences: Reneging on an offer can have long-term consequences on your professional reputation, especially within tight-knit industries. If you decide to accept the PE firm's offer, approach the situation with the consulting firm professionally, explaining your situation and the critical need for visa sponsorship.
Further Recruitment Opportunities: If you choose the PE back office role, continue to network and stay informed about consulting opportunities that offer sponsorship. Your experience in the PE firm could still be valuable, demonstrating your adaptability and breadth of knowledge in the financial sector.
In summary, while the PE back office role might not be your first choice, it offers significant advantages in terms of visa sponsorship and job security, which are critical considerations given your status as an international student.

To get sponsorship for consulting is really difficult - only a handful of firms sponsors. If you take the consulting internship, you will have to spend most of your summer recruiting anyways.
take the one that sponsors, you can always lateral for consulting (probably take a lower level role) once you get H1B
Don’t forget to factor in 20% win rate for H1B lottery when you are calculating your expected return tho
