Tips for a Harvard undergrad

Incoming freshman at Harvard here not entirely sure I want to do consulting or even anything finance but just want to chart my potential paths.

1.What advice/societies would you recommend looking into consulting

2.Any good Coursera or courses or books either?

  1. Any general advice

  2. Whens the earliest I can intern from, will going to a target open up freshman/sophomore internships?

  3. This is a bit weird but considering 4 concentrations(obv know I can only really do one primary and one secondary) South Asian Studies,African Studies(if your curious I'm Afro Indian this is why I have an interest),gov, and econ. Do you recccomend I do econ at least a secondary or is it primary or bust, sorry if this sounds dumb I enjoy all of these concentrations and yeah.

Gov or Econ as a primary and whatever as secondary. Do people from Harvard get into finance and consulting having majored in whatever? Sure. But it’s obviously harder when you major in “[anything] studies.”

My experience here is that you can study whatever you want, just have it be something you're interested in and do well + be able to talk about it in interviews. I got a buddy doing a non-CS stem degree going to GS, another doing some sort of weird humanities concentration that I can never remember whos going to some small boutique that he's really hyped about. By far some of the blandest people here are the finance tryhards who are studying econ solely because they think it'll help them land a job. It's so uninspired, something like a third of the students are studying econ or gov. You made it into Harvard; the world is your oyster. Don't waste 4 years studying something you can just go learn on the job if you don't have a burning interest in it.

And you can do a joint concentration if you want (basically a double major) but I don't know a whole lot about that.

But to answer your other questions:

1.) HCCG is the big consulting group, but there are a few other smaller one. Search the pre-professional clubs on the hub.

2.) You can start CS50 online over the summer and then if you actually take the class, its 99% the same and super easy because you've done it already.

3.) Try new things, don't be afraid of overcommitting to clubs/activities and scaling back once you figure out what really interests you.

4.) There are a few freshman summer internships, there are sophomore summer opportunities as well, but most internships start junior summer and you'll be recruiting for those starting spring semester sophomore year.

All these are great comments, I would personally reach out to people whom you think maybe you down the line and just say you are XYC heading to Harvard, and ask to be your mentor and kind of advise you along the way. These relationships take years to mature and the H brand really gets you looks. Later down the line these could be leveraged to opportunities or maybe even real advise when pursuing different career options.

Good luck and Congratulations on Harvard!
