What minor would be valuable with an Accounting major?

I go to a top 30 undergrad. I'm interested in working at a F500 company doing finance. What minor would be valuable with my Accounting major? I've been told to stay away from a Computer Science minor. Despite being familiar with the C++, Java, Python, etc. languages, I'm a bit cautious in minoring in this field due to risking my GPA.

What should I minor in?

Finance minor if your school offers it, or you could get a Finance and Accounting double major.

If you where a Finance major, I would say an Economics or Accounting minor or double major.

Economics. Given your accounting background, you could learn finance much more easily outside the classroom. Econ opens you up to a different angles of thinking than what you might learn in finance / accounting.

in it 2 win it

Listen to Kassad. Econ will get you thinking and expose you broader concepts, and is also (likely) much easier. You would be running less risk to your gpa. Worst case scenario is you get an actual econ class where you use calc - doesn't sound like much of an issue for you.

Good luck.

"That dude is so haole, he don't even have any breath left."

Try pick yourself up a Double Major - Id go with either Accounting and Finance or Accounting and Economics. IF you can't double up just minor in either of the above.

However you should always pick someone u enjoy - so if you enjoy Computer Science give it a go. You generally get good marks if you enjoy what your studying much more so than if you hate it.

However if your set on not doing Comp Sci either of those would likely be useful in finance in a F500.

The good news is that you have a few options. If you plan to do your CFA and write level I in 4th year, you may not need to minor in finance. Also, you also can join an investment club on campus and take a few finance courses as a substitute. If there is a particular type of company you're looking at, try minoring in an area that will provide you with industry expertise. I agree, that if you're majoring in accounting, you should get the CPA designation.

I work for a F500 corpfin. I would suggest a Communications/ Writing/ English minor. I've come to realize that communication and written skills are crucial for corp fin if you want to stand out and move up the ranks.
