Backpack or messenger bag

Hey guys... I am beginning an internship in DC next week. I am wondering whether I should bring a backpack ( the one i used for school) or go get a messenger bag? Any thoughts or opinions would be helpful.

Will you get a laptop from your firm that comes in a laptop case / messenger bag? I remember getting such myself when I interned. However, there was barely any space in it once the laptop was in. Ended up using a messenger back, because wearing a suit and a backpack looked really odd to me.

Are you bringing a laptop back and forth to work or going to the gym straight after work? Otherwise, either of them seem like overkill.

As an intern, I at least rarely had the need to carry anything to or from the office. Occasionally, I would bring the folder I used for interviews or a notebook, but that's about it.

Unless you're stealing office supplies or food from the pantry, I just don't see the need for the bag.

According to me, I totally depend on how you commute. If you commute by bike messenger bags makes riding extremely difficult since all the weight will come on side of the shoulder while backpacks are easy and comfortable to carry since they are more stable. I am a bike commuter and had a bad experience after using messenger in the past, currently I am using Eagle Creek travel backpack which is very well designed to keep your back strain free.
You do realize messenger bags were designed for bike/horse couriers? That being said I'd rather take a backpack on a bike but for the purpose of this thread, if I was going to work I'd never take a backpack.
