I remember wearing a suit on day 1 and then progressively stripping off clothes until I matched the others. There is a wide range of dress codes at different West Coast banks but generally, you can't go wrong with some kind of reasonable business casual. At minimum I think 3-5 button down shirts, a few pairs of pants, and two pairs of shoes, rotate and mix/match. One suit is probably fine to get away with, perhaps you have this from interviewing or summering somewhere, if not I wouldn't spend less than $500 on a suit.

If you're buying everything new and starting from scratch, it should be less than $1,500 in total.

Can't edit post so replying here. With respect to brands, it's pretty usual to see something on the level of Bonobos, J Crew, Banana Republic, Brooks Brothers...
