Shirt patterns?
I tried searching for this but surprisingly couldn't find any clear answers.
What sorts of shirt patterns are acceptable for IBD office wear? My current guess is just plain white/light blue for formal offices (+tie)? What about business casual? Are shirt patterns like gingham, pinstripes, windowpane, etc. with subtle color - read: not neon orange, bright red, lavender, etc. - acceptable in either business formal or casual offices?
College kid shopping for an off cycle IBD internship coming up. Please excuse the fashion ignorance.
Word for word the advice I got from a BB SVP:
"Wear a fuckin' plain white dress shirt. White's the only acceptable color, maybe powder blue like that guy has. That's OK too".
Would generally stick to plain coloured shirts with an optional patterned shirt for Friday when you can stretch your legs a little more. Even so, keep the patterns muted.

I'm not sure about business casual environments. Doesn't that mean you can wear sweatpants on Fridays?
My guidance was based on a formal, front-office work environment. Some more progressive places will have no ties on Friday or maybe even sweater with collared shirts and no jackets.
Stick with plain white and light blue shirts to be on the safe side. Patterns are less formal, but honestly, no one cares. As long as your shirt is not neon green or hot pink, no one will think anything of it.
Gingham is acceptable. Obviously white and light blue is safe, but gingham is fairly common in business casual workplaces.
Thanks for the replies guys. I'll stick to white/light blue with maybe a couple patterned ones and just see if others are wearing anything like that.
Look around and see what everyone else is wearing.
When you guys talk about "solids", does that include textured weaves like herringbone? Assuming all fibers are the same color, does that count as a solid?

I was wondering how common is it for people to wear check patterned shirts in the usual white and blue colors. I have a good number of solid shirts in the usual white, light blue, dark blue, some vertical stripes, and some patterned designs.
I know some have frowned upon check patterned shirts, but I don't plan to wear the check patterned shirts with my suit and we are business casual so I figured a nice way to change it up would be to wear a nice check patterned shirt every once in a while while still keeping with the regular colors.
Instead of posting this here why not just wait until you get to work and see if anyone is wearing those kinds of shirts
