Interning at a Major HF

I've been fortunate to have received a summer internship offer for an L/S Fundamental Equities role in one of the major pods (think Citadel/P72, etc.). I would like to maximize my chances of getting a return offer as I'm aware that return offers at my pod have been low in recent years.

1) What advice do you guys have that an intern should do to maximize the chances of a return offer? My understanding is that it's different from banking, where just being "good" doesn't cut it.

2)  For past interns, what was it that you have done that led to a successful return offer? For those who unfortunately did not get the return offer, what do you think were the key factors?

3) For analysts/PMs, has an intern ever managed to impress you? If so, what was it that they did?

Thank you!

Congratulations on snagging that summer internship! Here's some advice to help you swing from the vines of success and grab that return offer:

  1. Be Proactive and Engaged: Show initiative by seeking out additional responsibilities and demonstrating a genuine interest in the work. Ask insightful questions and be eager to learn.

  2. Quality of Work: In a high-stakes environment like a major HF, the quality of your analysis and research is paramount. Ensure your work is thorough, accurate, and provides valuable insights.

  3. Networking: Build strong relationships with your team and others in the pod. Networking isn't just about being friendly; it's about showing you can be a valuable part of the team.

  4. Adaptability: The ability to adapt to different situations and demands is key. Show that you can handle the pressure and pivot when necessary.

  5. Cultural Fit: Every firm has its own culture. Demonstrate that you're not just there to work, but that you fit in with the firm's values and way of doing things.

  6. Feedback: Seek out feedback regularly and act on it. Showing that you can take constructive criticism and improve is a sign of a good potential full-time hire.

  7. Mentorship: Find a mentor within the firm who can provide guidance and potentially advocate for you when it comes time for return offer decisions.

Remember, in a competitive environment like a major hedge fund, it's not just about being good at what you do. It's about standing out as someone who adds value, fits well within the team, and shows potential to grow within the firm. Keep these tips in your quiver, and you'll be well on your way to making a lasting impression. Good luck!
