Narrowing down stocks to actually research?

Curently looking to learn more about how you would narrow down interesting industries and sub sectors which are set for secular growth. How would you go most efficiently about narrowing down a handful of companies to research for a potential spot in the portfolio? I’ve been playing around with screeners on momentum as well as fundamentals. I’m interested in understanding more of the top down approach from which industries will grow —> sub sector —> finding the most promising companies in that sector, and then ultimately starting the research process on these companies.
