Timeline for Applying for Freshman Internships

Around when should I be applying for freshman internships? I've got a list of about 30-40 that I can at least apply to. Should I submit the application before or after first semester grades? Should I wait until the opportunity (maybe) appears on our careers site or just email some of the firms directly that suggest one of the previous two options? For reference, I'm looking for finance internships with heaviest preference given for small hedge funds and asset managers (my field of interest, I love investing and equity research and did an ER internship this summer), then small PE and IB companies.

I’m interested in interning for several reasons freshman year, some of them for this weird “enjoying life” thing you talked about. First and foremost, I definitely want to intern to put stuff on my resume, gain skills in finance, etc. But I also want to check out cool cities (lived in the suburbs my whole life) and hopefully I’ll be able to coordinate with my girlfriend and whatever she’s doing in the summer and we can stay in the same city, same apartment, have some fun.

How should I try to network in? Is LinkedIn a good method? I was also definitely going to gun for hedge funds and this type of role for this summer because I think I’d enjoy that more, thinking maybe next summer I could try for some of the more structured IB programs (I kind of qualify for diversity programs? It really depends what they’re looking for). So should I try to network my way into these smaller hedge funds? Thanks so much for the helpful response.
