A-levels advice
UK monkeys, do you think Further maths is a helping hand to get into top Unis?I am a bit skeptical because its hard but lot of people told me it really helps on applications to unis like Oxford E&M etc. …So now I'm thinking about taking Economics,Maths and Further maths…What do you guys think, does computer science or any other subject help?(Please don't write take whatever you want because i want specific subjects)
Sir this is WSO...
I believe you are looking for the studentroom forum?
You really need a third non-FM subject to be competitive for most target universities, so just be aware of that.
And yes, it’s true that most people at Oxford E&M or Cambridge/LSE Econ will have it. Slightly lower proportion but still advisable for UCL and Warwick. Less necessary for affiliated courses such as Cam Land Economy, Oxford PPE, or LSE Econ with something else.
It’s generally not a hard requirement, but unis might question why you didn’t take it if your school offers it. CS would be a good subject alongside the three you’ve mentioned and would make you competitive for some of the interdisciplinary courses at other targets - Warwick MORSE, Imperial’s new Econ & Data BSc etc.
So Economics,Maths and Further maths is good right?
Add a third non further maths a level. Unless it’s changed since I was applying for undergrad, Oxbridge don’t look fondly upon counting FM as your third. Imperial is known to accept it for some subjects, providing you take them all in the same year. Not sure on LSE but those who I know there who did FM did four.
You’re telling to replace economics right? But with what like a language or essay subject?
No. I’m saying if you do further maths you need to do three other a levels - likely maths, economics and something else.
Oh really why is that, it seems too much because then I won't be able to concentrate on the tough subjects.
No disrespect, but I've explained why in my answers above. Top universities often do not really count further maths as a separate subject to maths, especially if the maths is examined in Year 12 not Year 13. Unless this has changed recently, taking just FM/Maths + only one other subject will likely disadvantage you compared to other applicants for most courses at Oxford/Cambridge/LSE/Imperial/UCL.
See LSE's advice here, for example: "The combination of Mathematics, Further Mathematics plus one other subject is considered insufficiently broad for many of our programmes." As I alluded to above, I don't think there is a hard and fast rule that you can't get in with maths, further maths, and something else for any course at a G5 university, but it is very rare - the only people I know who had that situation were a few maths/computing/physics people at Oxbridge/Imperial. Not aware of any economists in that situation and would generally expect them to want a broader range of subjects at G5 universities. You might still be competitive for other decent Russel Groups though without a fourth a level - places like Bath, Nottingham, etc.
