Age and Recruiting

Hello all,

I'm sitting here planning the next steps in my career. I have been offered a spot in a few 1 yr MSF programs, and am tempted to apply to Georgetown (which is a 2 yr).

For the 1 yr programs, I will graduate in my mid 20s and be recruiting for an analyst job. The market looks bleak, though, and I am not expecting the situation to improve by the time I begin networking/recruiting for a seat in the coming months.

A 2 yr program provides the opportunity to be only looking for an intern seat for next summer, and pushes my ft search to a cycle that might be more open. However, I would be approaching late 20s when recruiting.

How much does age play into recruiting for An1?

My goal is to get to PE to learn/develop investing skills, and EtA of LMM business as the ultimate prize (although right now it looks like this space is getting more and more occupied

Age doesn’t really matter unless you let it matter.

Our MSF/MFin class had people aged 21-28. A couple people who came from different industries started as An1 at 28-29 and are doing great now. And you have older associates from MBA programs all the time.

It’s a 40-50 year career, don’t let reading posts from prestige chasing kids with no real world experience deter you just cause you are “a couple years late”. Do what is right for you and what you’ll enjoy in the long term.

When I networked as a 25-26 YO engineer turned MFin/MSF student, literally no one cared from analysts to very senior bankers (global heads/execs).

That’s reassuring. Which MSF programs do you see people having success from? I have offers from Villanova and Georgetown so far, and expect more offers soon
