BO but want to move to FO

Hi all,

I am due to start a BO internship at JP Morgan which I think would be good for experience, but I want to move to FO sometime. Is it possible for me to be able to convert my internship if I get a grad role into FO? Or what tips would you give me to be able to make that move. I have a few friends in FO already, either interning/analysts.

Any help is appreciated,

Thanks!

Get to networking..the good thing is its only an internship..would be even harder if it was a FT role. I did some time at JPM in a MO role before moving to banking. Idk why but at JPM most managers, NOT ALL, refuse to help anyone leave their business...if you are good at your BO role then they will try everything in their power to keep you there. I once saw a VP get yelled at and cursed out by an MD for helping an analyst on his MO team move to an FO role after being told "he must keep top talent here".

You have to network and network hard. I was able to move from MO to IB due to networking and a little luck. Have your friends introduce you to other analyst in FO and associates, reach out and build connections. So come graduation time and FT recruiting you can use those connections. Do a great job at your internship and stand out from the rest, network and get out of BO as fast as possible.

Well, thank you. Sounds stupid but at the same time, its warranted why they'd want to do that lol.

The Head of Trading interviewed me, and I've added him on LinkedIn and I'll try to see if I can somehow get a bit more from him. Would analysts/associates really help me get a job in FO though? I suppose they don't have much power so would it be that worth it? I'm quite good at building connections so I don't think it'll be an issue but just want to make sure I'm not networking with people who can't really get me into the door.

And also, if they were to give me an offer at the end of my internship, do I accept it and try to leverage it into something better? Or do I just apply for grad jobs instead?

The head of trading does interviews for BO jobs? interesting..but def talk to him. See what he likes outside of work and build a genuine connection. Do well on your internship and towards the end, have another conversation with him and express what you would like to really do.

An analyst and Associate can help. A first year analyst probably not but you never know who people know. Talk to them without the intentions of trying to get a job, just build a connection and in time, just ask for them to put your resume in front of some people. Even as an analyst, I have direct line of communication with my MD..someone on the team can leave or something, get the resume in front of him. Don't leave no stone unturned.

In terms of the offer, that's a tricky one. Especially since its JPM, so big if you renege on an offer, word can get around fast. I was at JPM before taking an IB role elsewhere and I didn't even say where I had the offer from and they said "what is firm x offering you?" never even told them where it was. Small world. So shop around before accepting, use those connections and if nothing comes your way then might just have to take that BO role, continue to network while there for a year.

Quite weird yes, but he said he had gone down a similar path as me but at a different firm lol. I'll attempt to, he's quite old and different to me but most def when I see him in person (or maybe I'll continue our conversation on LinkedIn). I already do know he likes rugby - something which I don't do or interested in lol.

Alright, yes. That makes sense, I'll be sure to do that, thank you. Hopefully, it's in person as this whole virtual thing doesn't seem like a good time to be able get to know others.

That's true, that's what I'm attempting to avoid. I've read somewhere that you can speak to your manager who can then help you but then as you said, they're attempting to keep their highest performers. Honestly, I wish to stay at JP for as long as possible but don't want to be stuck in BO for so long that it's impossible to move away. But, just wanted to say I'm grateful for the help, I'll def see how the 3 months pans out and build my connections & fingers crossed I can move over. Is it worth applying to other firms - if JP is gonna know about them?
