Goldman Sachs would have a cryptic waitlist email...

yes they do. post SDs, the team will decide on ranking with top offered first. If they decline and a spot becomes avail, the next in the ranking will be offered, and so on.

i know some banks use weird criteria to deal with tiebreakers in ranking such as prioritizing those with competing offers (for practical purpose + shows that candidate is very competitive)

It means they’re still interested but figuring things out (pending offers to others, head count, budget, etc). I wouldn’t lose sleep, that email is a good sign, if it was a straight up NO, they’d say so and not send that. Getting my job at GS I was “waitlisted” 3 weeks while the team figured out availability and all that, then got my offer.

Immediately get into contact with anyone you were networking with at the firm. Chances are they will try to help you if they can, and that could be the thing that pushes you over the edge. I was waitlisted for my SA at a BB and I firmly believe I got the job that way.

From my experience, if you tell them you have some exploding offers that expire in a week, they will give a decision quicker. In most cases, I’ve seen that telling firms this increases your chances of getting an offer since other firms want you as well and it makes you seem more of an attractive option. May or may not work, but it has worked for me.

I accelerated a process this year with an offer I received and in my experience, they didn't ask to see it. As long as you're confident and competent, you could probably get away with it. However, if you bombed the interview then claim to have an offer from GS TMT a week later, it probably won't work.
