Based on the experience i've had, albeit not much; If your manager wants you there, it does not matter what HR wants to do, they're mostly irrelevant. It might be the case that at your specific firm, HR extends internships on a monthly basis. If this is the case, it will probably mean your manager sending HR an email every month telling them to extend it.
