Made a joke with my associate today and it didn’t go down well…

At the office earlier today, my associate said he was going to go into the data room,(i obviously know what it is) and I said “can I come? I haven’t been to it yet” and he said to me that this type of immaturity isn’t suitable for the workplace. WTF is wrong with this guy or is it me

I don’t understand, how could it be malicious? That doesn’t make any sense

Your associate needs to relax and you need some better jokes…

Great to hear. Can I DM you and we can discuss my top jokes and lateral opps at MS?

Bro I just hated older MBA associates at my internship (except past veterans). These guys make life living hell because either they don't know how to do simple tasks or they'll constantly keep working and make you work late every night as well (latter being even worse because no one wants to work until 3 every night, except these guys, and they don't allow you to joke at all)

i love veterans, very down-to-earth and cool people to hang out with, as one might expect

Lmao dude is a clown. Your jokes could use some improvement but dude is totally someone who played full court press during pickup and always fouled then said it was all ball and to shoot for it

I’d honestly love to do this. He needs a good hazing. Worst part is he’s from the worst frat on campus so it’s even more laughable. Bald 5’3 no bitches such a L life I take pity on him

Two things:

  1. Is this US or UK? I worked in both and found the UK was more hierarchical / formal atleast at my EB. Also with non-native English speakers it's tougher to get them to laugh and sometimes they just don't get jokes at all.
  2. Regardless, you can always get a feel for whether someone is humorous or not and the types of jokes that would land. I use probably 10 different ways of talking to people at work (I crack jokes much more profane / out there with junior staff, but am obviously much more hesitant to joke with people above me). It sounds obvious but some don't entirely get it.

It sounds like a funny joke though and I'm sure you're fun to work with - but you need to adapt to his style of working unfortunately until you work with someone else. If it gets really out of hand post here again and we can give you some further advice lol...

The joke is adorable and endearing. To be honest, you must have accidentally said it in a salty/monotone/strange way in order to warrant such a response.

Semi, but I don’t think it’s that tbh. Some people are just weird lol. We all work in the same firm just relax and do your job. No need to be a hardo or an asshole to anyone. I just try to treat people the way I would want to be treated

How doesn’t anyone realize this same joke was posted about a year ago lol

Who said it wasn’t? But if you can’t be in a workplace and make conversation or make jokes with people you spend the majority of your days with that’s no life to live

What most stuck-up managers don't realize is that the average IB analyst is like 23, imagine being expected to ditch all kicks and giggles when you join the corporate world at age 22 and just put up a somber face every day like your grandpa in the 50s lol. The male brain doesn't even fully mature until age 25, people need to let it rest lol.
