Moving internally from risk to IB

Hey WSO,

I'm now networking with IBD analysts and associates with the aim of moving to IBD internally from Credit Risk. It's going well so far having talked to many analysts and associates, learning about their team and keeping an eye out for churn and open roles.

How would the interview questions differ from a typical graduate hiring process?

Expect lots of questions on why you want to move, make sure you have a good answer, and them asking you about IB to make sure you understand what you're getting into. Certainly some questions about a time you've worked hard on something, as even if you don't work a 40hr job people will want to make sure you are up for the massive commitment of IB.

Otherwsie I would expect the technicals and behaviorals to be very similar

Also depends on where you wanna make the move to - will be a different conversation if you wanted to move to levfin vs a sector team you’ve done little/no work on. Would be best to go in with select team(s) in mind, from a selling your background/skills/story point. Narrowing down teams will also help you narrow down the networking portion, but the extent of networking will depend on the bank from what I’ve heard (no experience personally).

Are you a 1st-year analyst at GS? If so, does GS allow 1st years to internal transfer? Going to a top BB for credit risk and would like to lateral to IBD but heard that I need to wait 1 year to do so.

Hey. There is an internal policy for risk that you have to spend 12 months before your eligible for internal mobility. But with IB, if they need someone quick then they'll renege it.

I just literally stalk teams on the systems internally and then write them an email saying I'm interested to learn about their work and how their team functions in the bank. Make sure, whatever you write, it's purely expressing academic interest and no hint of genuine intention to move teams. All it takes is one asshole to forward that email to your team lead then you're fucked.

Make some friends in other teams and have them refer you, or try to lateral to different groups if that does not work.

Worked at GS in a back office role. Also wanted to make the switch to IBD. Even with all the networking and having referrals to the teams, never was able to make the switch internally, so I ended up getting a IB role elsewhere. Not to say it isn't possible, but you may have a better chance looking outside of GS to get into IB given the mobility process is not great

Interested in making a similar switch - can i DM for advice?

Hey. Thanks for the insight and it is good to manage my expectations. I agree with what you're saying with regard to looking for an IB role in a different bank. Did you move to an MM/EB? Or a different BB? What was your position in GS?

GS says all this stuff about internal mobility but reading between the lines, its not encouraged...
