Researching Deals - Interviewing with several BBs
I am interviewing with several BBs in Los Angeles and am interested in researching deals their offices have sourced and/or executed. Does anybody have any tips on conducting such research? When I search the WSJ or NYT, I often see information about which BBs are involved, but I rarely see information about which offices are executing the deals.
I have access to all the standard b-school databases (CapIQ, etc.).
Thanks very much in advance.
A true deal is executed across numerous groups. If a deal as "done" out of LA, it was probably a Tech deal. However, no deal would be done exclusively by them, if it's an equity deal then ECM would help out. Like wise debt and M&A deals would have help from leveraged finance or DCM and the M&A team. If there is a complex structure, then they might use a capital solutions or structuring group. Is a sponsor involved, then sponsors would be involved.
Now do you see? The true question to ask, and it can usually be found on the website, is what groups are in the regional offices. In LA there are usually TMT practices, sometimes healthcare, perhaps a few specialized product guys. So, those guys would have taken part in any deal done, but who sourced and executed is a much more complicated issue then even a league table can tell. The only way to actually find out is by talking to the people involved.
I do see what you are saying. This was a very helpful post.
Thanks again, very much.

Not necessarily tech out of LA. Most BB's in LA run a generalist program - JPM, CS, UBS. You cover (and execute) general west coast regionals, retail, media and entertainment, gaming and lodging, real estate, financial sponsors and leveraged finance. Most of the tech offices are out of SF or Palo Alto. For most deals, LA offices will operate autonomously from NYC. In the bigger offices, there are close to 80 or 85 bankers, and there are usually ECM, LevFin, and M&A focused MD's out there. But as an analyst, you'll usually help execute it all.
It's tough to figure out which deals the LA offices have done, but if it's CS or UBS and it's west coast sponsor related, they probably had a hand in it. UBS LA just closed the Harrah's LBO the other day.
