screensharing accident

ignore the title, I am AN1 at mm in NY. I screen-shared something during a call with other analysts, an associate, and our VP. One of my bookmarks in my bookmarks bar was from a WebMD-esque page basically talking about eating disorders because I thought I had bulimia for a hot second (long story, I bookmarked it at 2 in the morning to read because I was freaking out about my deteriorating health). anyway, I was sharing my screen for a while and it was pretty dang obvious it was there on my bookmarks bar "BULIMIA: Defini.." so like if they were actually looking at the screen they would have seen it.

this is so awkward to ask but do u think anyone in my group would care or judge me? I am so embarrassed, I swear I am not even fat just paranoid because I use to be a fat child

Not only do they not care, if they saw it they will avoid talking to you about it.

Though I would highly suggest not bookmarking health issues on company laptops.

People respect privacy. So long as it isn't the ol' black and orange you'll be fine

Funniest

Thank you for specifying you are an AN1 at mm in NY, my answer would have been much different if you were at an EB in SF for example

Also, I never heard of Bulimia, so if I saw that, I wouldn't even know what it was

OP, as someone who has worked in finance for 10yrs now (IB and then now PE) I can wholeheartedly echo what others on here and have said - please do not worry about this at all or give it a second thought (honestly these things happen!) I get that you might be freaking out a bit, but let's look at this rationally/logically:

1. It's not that likely that anyone saw it, and even if they did it's very unlikely they will ever mention it or use it against you. Especially an associate or VP (i.e. someone who matters to your career). Firstly because gossiping about it would be a very quick way to find yourself getting a lecture from HR, and secondly because as others have said nobody gives a sh*t - and everybody has their own stuff trust me.

During my time in IB I'm pretty sure a colleague might have seen me on my phone looking up therapists and antidepressants (I'm on a low dose of Zoloft for anxiety) - but equally I've accidentally seen all sorts of stuff myself. I once swivelled my chair around to an associate's desk to see he was looking up hair transplant clinics, and when I was in an MD's office I saw one of his tabs was headed "reputable divorce lawyers" lol. This isn't high school, this is the real world where people have all sorts of issues in their private life all the time - so I can almost guarantee that if an associate or VP saw it they literally wouldn't care, and even if they did they'd never mention it to anyone as there is only downside risk to their career (from HR reprimands etc).

Equally I'm sure analysts are just trying to get through their day/survive so won't care. I think the worse case scenario (which isn't that bad at all) is during a drinks event some analyst mentions it jokingly after a few beers - probably still not that likely as it would be insensitive, and if it happens see my point 3 below as to why it wouldn't be a big deal.

2. It could have been a lot worse, seriously than a medical condition (and a common one at that). E.g. you could have been on WSO reading a thread saying "I hate IB and my VP is a massive d*ckhead" - even if you were just reading the thread and didn't post it, still not a great look. Again though I still don't think anyone would care (I might find that mildly amusing but would certainly never bring it up). Worse than that might be something that could be seen as insensitive that you actually only read out of curiosity, e.g. some edgy article on Andrew Tate saying why he's misunderstood or a Breitbart article saying Trump 100% really won in 2020 (not getting political here but simply pointing out that this is the type of stuff a fellow analyst might actually complain to HR about, which would be uncomfortable for you at the very least!) So yeah a common medical condition really isn't a big deal compared to people seeing stuff like that.

3. If someone ever brings it up, why not just say it was for a cousin/friend? Going back to my point earlier, if in the unlikely event someone brings it up (e.g. an analyst after a few drinks) just say "oh yeah, my cousin's had some health issues." End of conversation. Again this isn't high school, any associate or VP will be mature enough (or at the very least too worried about an HR complaint impacting their career!) to ever mention this to you - so the only possibility I can see is some immature analyst. But tbh most analysts (at least the ones I worked with in IB) were just focused on trying to survive the day. Anyway as I said above, people have all sorts of issues so I would imagine at least a few analysts you know have some type of physical ailments or mental health issues even at their young age. It's just that you don't know about them, but if you found out would you judge them? No probably not - so the reverse also applies.

Anyway good luck with your analyst stint OP - and yeah just to reiterate, this is not something you should spend any energy on worrying about. Honestly.

Of course I can’t read minds, and I don’t know the OP or his colleagues. But it’s just not something to realistically get panicked about - of course it’s not ideal it happened, but the long term consequences (or indeed any consequences) for OP in any reputable bank today would be zero effectively. I dont know any bank where this would be a major issue or career ender if that’s what you’re implying somehow.

Unpopular but true point everyone should be telling you here:

Any good peer in banking would tell you to learn to prioritise your health to some extent (And even to the fullest extent). Yes it’s hard, yes it’s tough and yes it’s fast paced. But key to succeed in the transaction based world is to see nothing should lead you to consistently / over a period of time be worried about an eating disorder. Nobody sane would hold a grudge to that or even share.

If they do - as said above, right to privacy and second, the place is probably rotten.

So no - nobody would be annoyed at you looking this, and in worst (best) case, someone caring for you would offer to help you out.

I think you should forget about it because seriously it’s no one’s business.

I personally would care more if you had job applications open hahaha or if you were saying something bad about someone on chat and they were there.

If someone ever asks play dumb and be like ok so what time is the meeting or divert like a politician hahaha

Know what really jiggles my tits? All the people who say "ignore my title, I'm actually so-and-so"... Like what? You can update it, it's not like you have to go through a verification process or something or that it's difficult. Like do you think I'm a fucking teller working in investment banking!?

Very annoying!

About 5 years ago I was in a meeting where I was showing our CRM system to a team of consultants who were going to build some workflow overlays.  They were recording the meeting as it was a walkthrough of how we used the system in its current state.  Anyway, my work computer was with IT so I was on my personal laptop.  I shared my screen, opened chrome, typed in the first letter of our CRM (P), and pornhub pre-filled along with about 10 lines of history.

Everyone on the call saw it and it was memorialized forever via the recording.  No one said a word.
