Sophomore looking for inputs

I'm in a bit of weird situation, hopefully some of you can provide some quality input.

I am currently a sophomore attending a school in the Northeast, I live in Mass.

This summer I am looking for internships but specifically out of state, (NY,Chicago, Charlotte, SF). I don't have relatives in any of the places listed except for NY, I just would really like to step out of my comfort zone and work away from home. Problem is, not many firms hire sophomore's to begin, so that alone eliminates a good chunk of firms.

This past summer I was lucky enough to have a summer position at a AM firm in Boston (think Putnam, Fidelity, Eaton Vance) working with one of their portfolio managers. My question to you guys, what is the best way do you guys think I should approach contacting the out of state firms that I'm interested in?

Any and all advices are welcome.

tl;dr
I'm a sophomore from up north looking for an internship out of state, what's the best way to approach.

network. reach out to alumni in the firms/locations you want to intern at. should probably be less picky about the firm considering you're only a sophomore.

Most of the alums work in the northeast and a few are dispersed around the US, but I have compiled a list of alums in the areas i mentioned and plan to contact them once I get done with finals. and regarding me being a sophomore, I understand completely which is why i said that narrowed the list down. What I have done was pretty much made a list of all non BB banks form those areas and plan on cold calling/emailing and hopefully getting a good feedback.

I did this sophomore year, and cold-calling got my summer internship at a small merchant bank. i think if you're cold calling, where you go to school is really important. My MD from the summer told me that my educational background (target) gave me a decent amount of credibility.

Yea that's true, I got to a semi. The people at the firms I have on my list to contact are individuals who have graduated from Northeast schools, and would know my school.
