Graduate Assistant Football Coach looking to get into Finance
I'm a 25 year old who just finished up being a graduate assistant football coach for a Power-5 NCAA Division 1 Football program. I have been doing that for the last 3 years w/ the school was paying me to coach and also paying for my masters (Sports Management). I've realized that coaching football is not for me as the low pay, constant moving (to small college towns) , high turnover, and complete lack of free time turned me off it.
I got my undergrad degree in Finance (3.6 GPA) from the same school and worked a year as an administrative assistant for a financial planning/services company that specialized in selling disability insurance. Currently, I am applying to Northwestern-Kellogg's MBA program and NYU-SPSS- Management and Systems programs (to get a foundation in computer science/ systems as a possible backup if I have no luck with any banking jobs).
I've been an avid stock trader since high school and I've always found the global equity market to be fascinating. Working as a GA coach I worked over 110 hours a week (on a good week) and lost track of how many times I slept in the office. Meaning, working long hours is no problem for me. Also, I worked for some incredibly arrogant/mean people who had no problem cursing people out multiple times a day- so I don't think I will have a problem working for narcissistic/needy types. I have always been interested in a career in Finance, I think i just missed the boat on the early internships freshman/sophomore year and was busy pursuing football coaching. I have always been interested in Private equity, I just know its incredibly hard to get into, especially with no experience. I was thinking about maybe getting an MBA and looking for an analyst position with a mid-level Investment Bank to get experience and then pursuing something in Private Equity after.
What do you guys think I should do right now in terms of career moves and what I should pursue right now given my resume and the current job market?
