Need Help With Post-UnderGrad Job Search

As the topic says, I have been having a really tough time trying find a job since graduating in May with a finance degree. My background: went to a state school in Illinois and graduated with a 3.0, did an insurance internship for one summer. I have been applying all over Chicago and the suburbs for financial analyst positions and even financial operations positions with no success so far at even getting call backs.

Now, I know that having a 3.0 from a state school is not helping me at all. The 3.0 is mainly a result of me not caring at all about school for the first two years, and then buckling down and eventually finishing with a 3.7 in my last semester of school. With my current credentials, it feels like my only options are sales roles at companies like Ed Jones or NYL that I have absolutely zero interest in doing.

So I am asking for advice on the steps I can take to better my situation and make myself more appealing to the companies I actually want to work for like Guggengheim, Northern Trust, etc. The options I have thought of are:

-Take the CFA Level 1 in June of 2017 and start studying now
-or, go through an accounting program at my local community college to take the CPA in a year

I would do either of these things while keeping busy with a part time job. Which of these two would make me look more attractive to employers? Or is there a completely different thing I should be doing to help my situation? Any advice or feedback is greatly appreciated.

I would list your GPA for your last two years in addition to your overall GPA. This should help you better tell your story. Another thing is given you are in Chicago have you mined your network / reached out to any and all contacts you may have as well as anyone who graduated from your school / program? This might help you to explain your situation personally.
