Where Would You Start Today?

Curious to hear professionals thoughts on where they would start a career today on the buyside given their experience and views on the market going forward? Tailwinds of the last 20 years today I imagine won’t be the same as the next 20, interested to hear commentary on PC vs PE vs Hybrid investing etc etc as a long term path in 2024+.

The right move at the pre-MBA level is credentializing with brand name and getting at least one deal done during your Associate stint. I would take 2 deals done at GTCR over 1 deal done at Apollo, but I'd probably take 2 deals done at Apollo over 2 deals done at GTCR. Point is not to argue about names, just a metonym for 2 deals A- firm vs. 1 deal A+ firm. However I'd still take UMM brand name over no deals done at MM because once you're out of household finance name, the pain from brand drop off is real. As long as you are accumulating good experience and brand names, you can worry about what you want to do after.

This is advice for the mediocre analysts. For those wanting to be career investors, go to the place you believe you will learn to be an investor best. Could be a MF or LMM. Could be in a T2 city.
