New in WSO

Hello everyone! I am a college freshman at a top 10 college. Currently I am planning to do internship in business for the coming summer. But my high school resume is weak and I spend the first semester at college checking out all the opportunities without doing a lot. Can any one give me some suggestions on how to start myself on the right track of building a career in finance? I spend a lot of time on reading related books and websites, but I still feel like an outsider maybe because I do not know anyone in the finance world (That is why I join the WSO). Also I want to join some business clubs on campus in the future, can anyone share their experiences with me or teach me how to prepare myself for a finance/business club?

Welcome to the forums

Pretty much any finance or business club is not going to expect a freshman to know much. Pick one where you genuinely like what the club is setting out to accomplish, go to every meeting, and meet the older members who have probably had finance related internships. They'll be able to give first hand accounts on how recruiting works at your school. I started going to meetings as a freshman and the club spent the first three meetings having more senior members break down what happened during the recent housing and financial collapse. It was fascinating. A good student-run organization will make sure the material isn't over anyone's head.

Also, read Barbarians at the Gate.

Listen, here's the thing. If you can't spot the sucker in the first half hour at the table, then you are the sucker.
