Best Prog Rock Bands?
My top five and favorite album from each (in no particular order)
Rush: Hemispheres closely followed by Moving Pictures
Genesis: Selling England by the Pound
Yes: Fragile
Pink Floyd: Animals
King Crimson: In The Court Of The Crimson King
What do y'all like?
Rush is the correct answer, although I would lean Moving Pictures slightly over Hemispheres. Would strongly recommend Dream Theater as well, they're my favorite band overall and are pretty much the most talented prog rock/metal band in the world (at least by instrument).
I've heard most of the popular stuff from Dream Theater. Any underrated songs you would recommend?
When you say popular, what do you mean, since fan opinions differ wildly about what is their best. Images and Words, Scenes from a Memory, etc.?
I could never get into rush for some reason, they were too heavy for my taste
Yeah, songs like YYZ or Caravan lean to the metal side of things. Rush is probably why I'm also into Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, etc.
fuck that, how about you give me a R
I cannot believe someone asked this on here as I am a huge prog rock fan and have never met any in real life, Rick Wakeman used to play the organs in the Freemason's Temple in London back in 2017ish, I haven't been in London since then so do not know if he still does.
Also shocked no one mentioned Meatloaf yet, while he wasn't a band he had a lot of prog rock inspired songs and albums. Bat out of Hell, Paradise by the dashboard light, Hot Summer Night, Wasted Youth, Nowhere fast etc. Purists say he barely makes the cut of Prog Rock but I put him in that category
If you want something more modern look into Andrew WK, he does a lot of Prog rock inspired music which I have heard described as Wagnerian Rock but still I would say he is really good.
Songs to check out:
Jethro Tull - Aqualung
Pink Floyd - On the turning away
Mike Oldfield - Moonlight Shadow
Meat Loaf is awesome (RIP), Bat Out of Hell 2 is one of my favorite albums of all time, even though all songs were written by Jim Steinman
I wonder why that is too, I almost never meet prog rock fans
Led Zeppelin is my fav prog rock band. Hot take I’m aware
they're amazing and probably my favorite band, but I would say they are definitely not a prog rock band
Haha, cool seeing this thread. My first co was 100% driven by prog metal :)
I got to meet John Petrucci at NAMM a few years ago. Probably one of the few times I was glad I met one of my favorite musicians.
Did you see his Grammy award speech? He's #1 of people that I want to meet, seems like such a cool and humble guy and is the best in the world at what he does
I went to a Pink Floyd tribute band show a couple weeks ago, and other than everyone in the audience being more than 50, it was a really badass show.
Agreed with Animals being really good. I have a soft spot for Dark Side of the Moon, but I really really love Animals too.
Not prog rock, but Motörhead. Usually blast it through the headphones so people kept their distance. Social like that..
Would U2's "POP" album at the time be considered prog rock? It was definitely ahead of the times.
These are prog metal but oh well:
1)Polyphia
2)Intervals
3)Animals as Leaders
Haven’t seen Camel mentioned
Mogwai - Young Team
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift your skinny fists like antennas to heaven
Swans - every album is fire
