Hair loss - dating/career?

Recently noticed that the hairline is receding rapidly. Trying to figure out whether it's worth fighting with propecia/rogaine/surgeries etc., or going the "just shave it bro" route. Wondering if any older members have insights on hair loss and how it affected them professionally and in the dating game, and if so, how they chose to deal with it.

Time to hit the gym more often, bro. Chicks like bald guys that are in shape.

"If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them." - Bruce Lee

Found myself in a similar spot this year but usually balding isn’t usually rapid. Plus my hairline wasn’t receding I just noticed hair falling out in the shower and sink. I attributed it to not getting as much sunlight and exercise, or I could have had COVID and the hair loss was a post virus symptom... I have no clue but I noticed it has stopped.

Anyways, it got me thinking about maintaining my hair and I found this link: https://michaelsaves.com/save-money/keeps-hair-loss-review/amp/

Apparently the dude only uses fin for dirt cheap annually and it’s been working. Worth the read if interested.

I'm a female but came here to suggest this - my brother-in-law started balding and he did this exact thing. Generic propecia and uses a pill cutter to dose appropriately (the higher dose form was cheaper I think?) and it's worked out great for him.

It might work, and I am no expert but I would think that its effectiveness might depend on whether or not the person is a good genetic fit for the treatment.

OP here - thanks for the suggestion. This was definitely something I was looking at, and it seems like finasteride is the only reliable way to slow/stop hairloss.

Have you had issues with side effects? The only thing really stopping me from going out and getting a prescription is all the negative press surrounding Propecia. Definitely apprehensive about the sides but will prob end up taking anyway since it seems like the only way to address hair loss.

Tough choice on your end. It’s better to maximize the potential you, so you are happy with who you are and how you look.

If you can afford it, go the transplant route and pills to maintain/improve the growth.

Hit the gym too. Do this for you.

Try the big 3, mino shampoo, finasteride, and rogaine. Worked wonders for my hairline.

Out of curiosity, how old are you and at what age did you start taking this stuff.  The OP is only 23

Are you a good looking guy?  if you are, shave it off and hit the gym, as others have said.  Much of hair loss is hereditary but some of it might be life style and treatment of your hair.  It is important not to use harsh substances when you wash your hair.  It is also important to thoroughly wash out any substances that might plug up the pores.  If you are an average looking guy, I would look into some type of treatment that would help grow it back or slow the hair loss.  Before you go and try Propecia, Rogaine, plugs or similar fixes, I would first try a natural approach like getting better hair products and try some biotin, which is just a vitamin that is suppose to stimulate hair growth in some people.  I am not sure if the benefits are mostly seen in people who have a biotin deficiency or not.  If you look at the reviews of some biotin products, some people claim to have seen good results.

The face makes the hair, not the other way. I hope you have a nice face, gl. Ill shave it and stay lean. Youll need some edges and it has to come from your face if you know what i mean

I would try to fight it, I think you can get good results with rogaine/minoxidil and finasteride. Hair transplant if its in your budget. If not just accept it and shave your head, not the end of the world, especially if you're older. Only thing worse than being bald is being 80% bald and refusing to shave it

Once you get to be 30ish being bald isn’t a bad look if you’re confident and in shape. I’ve got a full head of hair and shave down with a zero razor by choice just because I think it looks clean as hell with a slight stubble beard. Kinda like Sean William Scott. But if you do want to go the HT route it’s widely accepted these days and not incredibly expensive if you amortize the cost over the useful life (ie, forever)

Currently 23 so probably going to have to go the hair transplant route at some point if I want to save it. The way I've rationalized the cost is that I'm not planning on buying a car anytime soon (live in NYC and have public transportation), and I'd rather drop 20-30k on hair transplants a than a shitty brand new Honda lol

Fin works well, started taking it as soon as I saw recession and have had no side effects after a few years and my hairline is prob above average for my age now. Fin won't restore your hairline though so the only way to restore a hairline is a hair transplant pretty much. Also you can't/shouldn't get a hair transplant until your hairline stabilizes/you probably would need to go on fin anyway to preserve a hair transplant

Sorry to hear about your issues with Accutane, definitely trying to avoid problems like that. I've done a fair bit of research and it seems like 5 alpha reductase inhibitors like dutasteride and finasteride are harmless for the majority, but a select minority get horrible persistent side effects. The counter argument is that the medical community is in disagreement over whether or not finasteride is directly linked to those persistent side effects, or if there are other factors at play (which seems to be what Merck regularly quotes, alongside most dermatologists). On the other hand, it's definitely in Merck's best interest to hide any evidence of persistent side effects, given that finasteride is really the only worthwhile treatment for MPB...

Right now I'm definitely leaning more towards trying it out and seeing how it goes. It's causing me more stress to stand by passively watching my hair get whittled away, than it would be to take a somewhat controversial (though FDA approved...) drug. Either way, appreciate the input and I'll talk further with my doc.
