Jeen-yuhs Kanye documentary on Netflix
Before the new Kanye, the bad mood Kanye, the always rude Kanye, spaz in the news Kanye, there was a struggling kid in Chicago. No one believed in him besides his mom. But he believed in himself and knew he was going to be a star. He found mid-level success as a producer for beats, but wanted to be a rapper, not a producer. No record label wanted to sign him. His boss at his record label refused to let his career advance and just wanted to use him and his talent for their own bottom line. And so Kanye hustled, playing his music in the receptionists office at Def Jam records before he got kicked out, getting a stone-cold reception to what would be a future top 10 hit in All Falls Down. Only Kanye believed in himself, and believed that he was responsible for his own destiny and creating his own luck.
This man is an inspiration. Nobody made Kanye but himself who he is today. If he didn’t believe in himself when everyone doubted him, he wouldn’t have made it. He never settled for what others told him he could be and always knew his true value. This documentary is brilliant film-making and incredible footage and will resonate with anyone trying to make it in life. It's really moving and emotionally resonant. He says in 2002 in the documentary: "I’m going to do it the way I fucking want to do it. And with the backing that I got… I’m not going to say that there’s no way that I can fail, but hopefully with God’s blessings—and I got the Roc on my side, and I got Chicago on my side—it shouldn’t be no way for me to lose, really." And he was 100% right and now has 21 Grammys and is worth several billion dollars. It's an incredible portrait of someone's power and self determination all coming true.
Tldr: Kanye West spoke his whole life into existence, over 20 years ago, & some dude had the foresight to start filming Ye’s career since before it even started 20 years ago. This is an incredible story and much watch TV
and the guy behind the camera, Coodie, has an incredible story as well. He left his career in Chicago and moved to New York to film a documentary on a struggling artist, because he knew he was going to be a star one day. He turned around and sold the documentary that he created to Netflix for a cool $30M.
Thanks m sure it’s a great piece of film making, but seeing the train wreck of a man Kayne is now makes it hard to invest time watching the doc.
I wonder if instant fame just messes up peoples brains or something.
It's worth it for sure. The documentary actually ends in 2020 and there's a decade long break in the action - the guy producing the documentary, who is one of the first believers in Kanye, gets locked out of Kanye's circles and becomes estranged for awhile before reconnecting to finish the documentary. It's pretty uncomfortable to watch current Kanye, who has kind of gone off the deep end, compared with the soulful always smiling Kanye from earlier in the documentary. The man's story is tragic in a lot of ways too - he's seen so much success, with 21 Grammys, a successful fashion business that's made him a billionaire, but the person who mattered most to him in his life, his mom, died and now his wife divorced him and is going out with Pete Davidson. When you see how much fame he's had, and how much loss Kanye's had to endure it's not surprising that he kind of went off the deep end
Also he's known to have pretty severe mental illness and has been open about his bipolar disorder. Some speculate manic episodes led to his successes, I won't opine on that and play armchair therapist. But it's obvious he's not been doing well and I hope he gets the help he truly needs soon.
Kanye sucks
Negative
Drake is the 🐐
It’s so inspiring seeing how the labels did not take him seriously at first, but the man stayed true to himself. Persistence is so key to success.
Persistence is key
I heard he likes fishsticks.
Kanye has high key gone crazy though
He’s a guy with a clear mental illness who’s in the spotlight 24/7 and is dealing with a crazy ass situation w/ his ex wife. Have some sympathy for the guy
Seriously, idk why people feel the need to constantly dog him. He seems like a good enough guy and the documentary also demonstrates that.
Living legend
listened to Kanye constantly while I was in my dad's freezing cold garage gym in the winter 2020/21, while going through some shitty times with my mental and physical health.
dude changed my life
I really enjoyed part 1, anyone who listened to college dropout when it first came out back when we had mp3s knows insanely talented he was. Then in this docu it literally starts and you see Kanye basically wrote that track as a teenager then you see his incredible work ethic and how badly he wants to transition from producer to mc.
Then the scenes with his mom, coodie really knew when to grab his camera. Very well done.
In light of his current antics do you think it takes away from what he has done for the genre of rap and music as a whole. In my opinion, his previous work remains some of the most inspiring and sonically pleasing shit I’ve heard as a rap fan.
