Recurring dreams while you sleep

Just for fun, wondering if you have similar recurring dreams as me (while you sleep).

  1. The Forgotten College Class: you’re in your final semester of college and there’s one class that you never attended all semester.  You need to pass the class to graduate, but you never read any of the books or attended any lectures.  You might not even know where or when the final exam is.  The dream is tiring as you freak out as precious seconds drain away on final exam day.  You wake up, and realize you are no longer in college; you graduated a long time ago and are relieved.

  2. The Steep Road: you’re driving on a road that gets steeper and steeper.  You struggle to keep momentum because once you lose it, your car would stall and then go backwards and you’ll never get to where you were heading to.

  3. The Busy Waiter: you’re a waiter at a restaurant that just got slammed by a lot of customers sat in your section.  You are good at your job (great at multitasking) but the volume is ridiculous.  Customers start to get angry.

Do you have similar dreams?
What kind of recurring dreams do you have?

What are the most prestigious dreams? (WSO fav question)

Defo.

1) Falling bike nightmare: Old, recurring nightmare which used to freaked the shit outta me, but now I've gained the ability to lucid dream. When I see weird shit (especially recurring shit) happening, I'll realize that I'm in a dream, and I'll gain awareness in my dream and can do whatever tf I want. The nightmare is:

I'm cycling on my bicycle/ tricycle with my mom pushing me happily (I started having this nightmare starting age 5 so that's why my mom is pushing me). After she pushes me, I realize that I can cycle on my own now which makes me elated. I try to be a jackass and pedal faster and faster and faster and reach top speeds. I don't realize that I'm approaching a cliff and I zoom right off the cliff. I fucking throttle across the air on my bike, scared as shit. My stomach goes empty which is the very vivid sensation that you feel when you ride a rollercoaster and it falls steeply. I get freaked the fuck out as I brace myself ready to fall and die.

2) The meaning of life: I get into an EB (EVR or LAZ, for some reason it's always those 2) as an IB analyst. I'm super proud of myself and I hit the desk with full passion and drive. I tell my parents and they tell me how proud they am of me. I work hard because I can't let my parents down, and I become a top bucket analyst and then successfully break into PE. I then transition into the public markets where I make PM. Then I wake up

Yea so basically you have to develop recognition. First, keep a dream diary then try to write your dreams immediately after you wake up cuz obviously you forget them fast. Then, identify common patterns in your dreams. That'll help you develop a ton of recognition and awareness, and spot the trends. Hammer that in. So over time after having spotted these patterns, while dreaming, once you recognize these patterns you'll know you're dreaming. In that moment, you'll 'wake up' in your dream.

Quoting an example of mine, my common trend was that I'm falling off the cliff on my bike. So the next time I fall off the cliff on my bike, I know I'm dreaming. I start flying and whatever after that.

I've heard people practice 'pinch points' or similar things, basically it's the old saying - slap yourself or pinch yourself to know if you're dreaming.

Over time as you get more experienced, you can ditch the dream diary and you don't even need to look for those patterns. You can just realize, 'Hey this shit is whack af, I must be dreaming' and then you'll realize you're dreaming.

For example, one time, in my  dream I shoved a man on the street but he didn't budge. I thought, 'Hey, I bench 140kg for a triple, ain't no way I can't shove a man over, this is weird. I must be dreaming.' Then I realized I was dreaming then I could do whatever I want. You can imagine what I did.

(Btw I didn't keep a dream diary, I just remember my patterns in my head cuz I don't rlly forget my dreams so I can rmb. Cba to deadass keep a dream diary, I've got better things to do than that)

In my dream, I spent many years as senior analyst before making PM. I was a generalist in my dream which helped transition to PM because I'd be comfortable looking across all the sectors and constructing the portfolio based off that. Coming from PE in my dreams, I focused on leveraging that skillset so I focused on recruiting for deep value/ activist. I have 15~ YOE from my dreams so yea, I'm imparting this wisdom to you

This reminds me of the Driving with No Brakes dream.  I’m driving a car and the brakes stop working. I’m maneuvering to try to avoid hitting anything and through the dream I never hit anything.  For example, I’m dodging other cars, some of them at stop lights that the light miraculously turns green and the cars move before a collision.  Then I wake up and realize I’m not driving and was sleeping.

Funniest

Before I go to sleep, instead of counting sheep or the like, I often picture myself at the home plate on a pro baseball field with the pitching machine feeding me fastballs and me cracking home run after home run, over and over again. Sometimes there are scouts there talking amongst themselves saying "this guy is good." Then I fall asleep.

Recurring sleep paralysis, so a demon hovering over me or pacing around my bed watching me sleep.

I’ve had something like that before.  Cannot move, with something supernatural.  Not recurring though.

I’m a nut and have some strange dreams.

  1. One that got away. Periodically I dream of an ex. Rest of these dreams are NSF WSO.
  1. Murder of a childhood bully. For a good clip, I dreamed of murdering a bully from my childhood. I did it clean and disposed of the body discreetly. In the dream, I even joined the search party for the individual to feign my innocence in the matter.
  1. Self defense of malicious person attacking a family member. I’ve had a few dreams of ish going down where I act in self defense and lay out a malicious individual. The recent dream I had went as far as me giving my attorneys number verbally to my family member as I presumed I’d be locked up. What happened was I was out to lunch with my mother and a friend of hers. A disturbed individual pulled out his penis and began thrusting their way blocking their exit from a restaurant booth. As I’m seeing this while coming back from the bathroom, I grab a barstool by the legs and give it a Barry Bonds level swing striking the unsavory person in the dome leaving him sprawled out with a pool of blood forming around his head. Seeing what’s going on NYC these days, I bet that would be the case where I’d be locked up and read my rights in a case like this. This recurring dream feels like a premonition.

For me it's the air conditioning unit.

I remember when I was 12 and sleeping with my parents. I had a nightmare about ghosts/monsters coming from the AC unit. The first time I saw them, I fought them with a sword.

I've even had sex with one of the monsters at 15.

Most recently I've throat chopped them.

Tbh, I enjoy this recurring dream because I just have so much self-awareness and can harness the power of creativity and thought.

At #2 comes my dreams where I can fly. The first time I got this dream, I jumped off my grandparents' 4 story house at age 14, and I just flew. The second time I flew around my high school. I love this recurring dream.

The forgotten class one is my most frequently reoccurring dream, along with a variation of it where I get a call from my college saying that there was an error and I still need one more class or I have to return my degree.  I have similar ones I'll call the "missed flight" and "missed meeting" dreams where I'm either trying to get to the airport, or already there, and I just can't find my flight, or in a building and can't find the room for a meeting.

Wonder what this says about me.  Imposter syndrome hitting me hard or something?

I’ve dreamt that I really had to make a flight and ended up parking my car inside the terminal as I run to my gate (like I didn’t care what happens to the car).  Really tiring dream.

You should really read Carl Jung / read into dream analysis in general. The three dreams you listed are really fitting for someone who works in finance

Thanks.  I just looked him up.  My general impression is we over analyze dreams - but maybe these readings might change my mind.

I have night terrors quite often (wake up in a sweat screaming or even jumping out of bed). I’ve had this dark figure appear in dreams since childhood. It’s this tall (maybe 8ft tall) black void. No eyes, just like a lanky human like shadow.

The weirdest part is I’ve had it appear in this same fictional manor. It’s the huge English style manor that’s well maintained and beautiful on the outside. The right side of the place is immaculate, but empty. The left side is nice but at the far end of the hall it’s freezing cold. It lives there, and will run after me. I’ve died in several dreams because of it throwing me out a window or strangling me. It’s weird.

Two weeks ago I was in my childhood hallway. My bedroom is on the far right end of the hall, and it was in the hallway entering my room and I heard my child self screaming. I (as an adult in the hallway) started charging it and yelling. My wife woke me up from that. I haven’t figured out a correlation between when I see it or not, it’s pretty random but seems to be increasing lately (maybe just stress?)

Haha I loved Stranger Things because it’s not dissimilar from the shadow monster there, but not huge it’s more human like. Was pretty weird to see that on screen because I’ve seen this nightmare monster thing since I was ~7 years old.

Interesting about affirmations, what do you mean by that? Reminding myself it’s not real before I sleep or what?

Sounds like a scary movie I’d love to watch (my wife loves scary movies so I have to watch and most I’m not scared).  This seems real.

I’m unsure if you’re Catholic, but I’d reach out to a priest if you are. This screams demonic oppression. A friend of mine is a diocesan exorcist and I likely know more than I should about that side of aisle. I’ve also seen Fr. Ripperger speak.

Again, if you’re Catholic, go ask for some deliverance ministry and they will help you uncover a way to put this figure away.

I was raised Catholic, went to Temple for a bit, but am not very religious. I haven’t heard of demonic oppression before, and quite frankly regret searching it at 10:30P PT right before going to bed (lol). I have been diagnosed with a mental illness (well a few) where night terrors are quite common.

What’s the difference between run of the mill (I know it’s 2% of adults but that’s still a lot of people) night terrors vs oppression?

You're falling from an extremely high place but right when you hit the ground you wake up.  I feel like everyone's had this one before.

Another one I have a lot is basically "I've fallen and I can't get up."  I'm doing something in a dream but I fall over and can't get back up for some reason.  And then I awake to find myself struggling to get up out of the bed in real life.

The failing from a high place and then waking up before hitting the ground - I’ve had that dream.

Also, the can’t move feeling dream.

You are not alone.

I am over 20 years out of college and still have the forgotten class dream. For me it’s some PE class that I thought I dropped and get to the end of final semester and find that it was not dropped and 100% participation so I got a F putting some unknown job in jeopardy.

I wake up freaked out every time. Then I realize I’ve been through so many background checks over the years that I definitely did graduate.

I’ve never had the PE class one, but similarly in that had you’ve known about the class you would have passed it easily.  My dream is usually an English Literature class, where the final exam questions could have been easily answered had I just read the book or attended lecture.

True story though I had a Social Psychology elective in undergrad and I saw the professor randomly first thing in the morning near the Campus Center.  She was getting breakfast and she asks me if I was ready for today’s exam.  I was like, what exam?  She gave me a bewildered look. Anyways, at least there was a couple hours to study and I did well - but something like the dream almost happened.
