Thoughts on White Spaniards Using Diversity Programs?

As an actual person of color, I'm a little frustrated because I see so many white international students from Spain and LatAm countries break into IB through Hispanic/Latino diversity programs.

How do people at banks feel about this? Do they not mind because they still get to say they were able to hire x% Hispanic interns/analysts? Or because banks need educated native Spanish speakers for their LatAm coverage groups?

Am I the only one who is bothered by this?

Funniest

That's cool and all, but please show me literally one person who asked.

You're already an actual person of color, just take advantage of the programs that exist for you and stay in your lane. Don't worry about other people.

Am I the only one who is bothered by this?

Yes.

Edit: Thanks for the MS; you guys just furthered my preconceived notions that the woke, SJW crowd is intolerant and dogmatic.

So you think a racist program should only extend to the people that you choose?  These programs should’ve never been about race to begin with they should’ve been about socioeconomic status, if anything at all.  Nothing to see here.

Controversial

What's even more messed up about this is if you think about it on an even deeper level.....so indigenous people were enslaved and brutalized by white Spanish conquistadors and part of the intention of these programs is to reverse the lasting effects of that oppression and racism.

But if you are giving diversity positions to white Spaniards from Europe (or even LatAm for that matter), it would be like giving an African-American hiring slot to a white person related to slave owners....

This goes beyond just whether it makes sense. It's almost perverse.

EDIT: Wow, why the MS? Perhaps, some people are having trouble dealing with inconvenient truths....I'm not a huge fan of diversity programs either but that doesn't change my thoughts above.

"so indigenous people were enslaved and brutalized by white Spanish conquistadors"

If this bothers you, I really suggest you don't look up any history before the Iberian discovery of the New World, because slavery, conquering, encomiendas, etc. are nothing new and those "white Spanish conquistadors" that you dislike so much were the product of over 700 years of Muslim rule. 700 years... "America" as a concept isn't even 500 years old. Additionally, I suggest you come to learn that "slavery" and all those other discrimination based institutions that people dislike so much are still in existence and are as old as prostitution, if not older. This is similar to how many Africans and African Americans (really, Black Americans) in modernity have taken on Islam, claiming that Christianity is the "white man's religion" while ignoring how Africans practicing Islam is the product of Moor conquest of Africans, meaning the Arabs who enslaved African people. To take it one step further, Christianity isn't even a "white" (white in America = European) religion because the first Christians were all Jews originating from the Middle East, i.e. closer to Arabic/North African descent rather than "white" or European or Indo-European even.

History lesson aside, you should try to actually understand how humans function and work and just come to grips with the fact that the retroactive pity party of the past is fruitless and nothing exclusive to any group. Literally all variants of people have been enslaved at one point or another throughout history: Jews, Italians, the Irish, Arabs, Chinese, etc. unfortunately, this includes indigenous people and sadly, that cannot be changed. We can only hope to get better from here, but that's only going to happen looking forward, not looking back.

know a kid who changed his last name from something generic like "Smith" to something spanish sounding because he's a quarter latino

he got a BB offer coming from a non-target - i am not kidding

Damm you sound extremely racist.

How many white Spaniards do you personally know of studying in the US? As a matter of fact, are you assuming that because they have a Spanish name + look white they have to be from Spain? Do you even know that Hispanics can also be white?

Truth be told I couldn’t be happier that people are exposing this bs programs for what they are. It is economic status that really determines one’s opportunities, and programs should aim for them

I'm cuban and in these diversity programs. I look white and dont have a spanish last name so people give me looks.

I am actually from Spain.

White kid, blonde, nearly looking like a Norwegian. I tried that way because technically I am Hispanic for the US.

Manage to get an online interview for some shit diversity program for freshmans.

The face of the interviewer when she saw me, was priceless.

Still wondering why I did not get the spot.

I’m from LatAm and from Spanish descent. I was born and raised in a Spanish speaking country and got into a US top school as an international.

I look white and got into a top BB without using any stupid diversity programs. If you are good and know your shit you shouldn’t have trouble opening doors. What bothers me the most is how much you people of color complain about how bad you have it. A lot of you claim that you are from latin descent but can’t even speak Spanish fluently and haven’t even been south of the border ever.

Diversity programs are absolutely flawed and as many posters already mentioned it should be based on socio-economic status instead. Stop whining and be grateful that you have a US passport and don’t have to deal with all the international visa bs we have to deal with. Everyone is fighting their own fight, you’ll get nowhere trying to bring others down.
