quant funds are not accommodating of academic mistakes, so I’d advise them to focus on their gpa and getting into a good grad program. Your friend is competing against every math and physics PhD who is tired of working 10+ hours a day on research, getting paid jack shit for it, and looking for options. The people I know who made it direct from undergrad were taking grad level courses by sophomore year and publishing papers in major journals - academics were never a problem for them because their academic ability was 1-2 sigma above the average high performing college student. If your friend is ready for that level of intensity then that’s great, but it starts with totally fixing the GPA and landing a great grad program for a fresher slate.
