Are PE headhunters useful for non-IB analysts?
1 year of prior banking experience and 1 year of current corporate / operational experience - would the main headhunters (CPI, Amity, etc.) be helpful to try to break into LMM / MM PE or would they only be focused on the traditional on-cycle path for current first years? Are there headhunters that would be more receptive in working with someone not on "the path?" Looking at both New York and Boston locations.
You have nothing to lose by trying. I'd imagine LMM / MM PE funds would be more receptive than traditional MF / UMM funds.
In your current role, are you doing something like corp dev / FP&A / strategy?
Yeah that’s my current role - more strategy and a bit fp&a not corp dev. Was thinking lmm / mm might be more receptive and see more value in having both the financial and operational background for both the investing and also portfolio company management whereas the largest funds while having the most rigid recruiting processes, also probably have separate operations guys. Was not initially interested in PE right out of banking but feeling really slowed down in corporate and I think both of my experiences now lend well to all aspects of PE day-to-day work. The LMM space / bordering MM seem like an exciting place to get into and grow longer term - smaller funds seem more receptive to career track and less strictly 2-year programs as well. Relatively new at looking into PE so happy to hear thoughts from those in the industry if this move looks to make sense. Considered if corp dev would’ve made sense too but I think the corporate environment really isn’t for me.
Also wondering if anyone could share their experience in the recruitment process for those that didn’t go IB -> PE. Hoping maybe looking at non-NYC opens some options
Nope. PE recruiters are looking for easy sells and non IB to PE is a hard sell. Coming from a non IB background you are much better off reaching out directly to associates or VPs. Also consider entering PE at a different position besides deal team execution. Some examples I have seen are sourcing only roles or PE ops.
