Blackrock REPE v.s BB IB reputation

Hi I am currently at 1st year S&T analyst, and I got an opportunities to literal to BB IB (MS, JPM, GS) or Blackrock Real Asset Private Equity arm.My goal is to land M7, then go to prestigious fund like BX, KKR etc.. (don’t care abt corp or REPE)I would like to know which looks more prestigious on my resume from the perspectives of interviewers of elite PE funds, Business School Admissions, or even girls at the bar.If it is normal PE fund, PE is a clear winner, but I am not sure how is Private Equity arm of Blackrock is looked compared to top tier BB IBDs.

You can't go MBA to PE without prior PE experience. I think your options are below -

BLK REPE -> (MBA) -> other REPE shops. You don't even need the MBA hence the (), but your options will mostly be in RE. KKR and BX do have excellent REPE arms but, do you like real estate?

BB IB -> do oncycle this summer -> PE associate -> (MBA) -> post-MBA PE. Again, the MBA doesn't really do much for you here but you can go if you want to.

Gotta level-set your expectations though: the prestigious buyout funds take classes of a dozen people or less, so to get in you'd want to have a 3.8+, top group that regularly places there (top BB is not enough), and ideally from a target. It's a very small landing path, and you can lateral up once you have experience, but can't use an MBA to trade up to a big firm.

I see thank you very much for the detailed explanation.

Do you have any ideas for how is Blackrock REPE is looked upon vs BBIB in terms of prestige on resume etc?
I don’t hear much about them so not sure how BR REPE or other direct alternative investment teams have solid exit opps

Don't focus on prestige my friend... you have to like what you do.

Spend some time thinking about it - do you LIKE real estate as an asset class? Sounds like you do. BLK REPE is a solid place to be for that - Blackstone REPE is king of that space, and you would definitely be able to move there eventually if you wanted to. Would you rather do real estate PE or traditional PE? The traditional PE is, just on an odds basis, not likely to be at a BX/KKR, so consider MM PE as your most realistic landing spot.

Both are great roles so take a breath, stop blindly ranking things based only on prestige and think about what you actually want to do as a career. It's easy to get caught up in the MOST prestigious role at your age but once you are 3-5 years out of school no one gives a shit, and you better like what you do in order to be good at it.

Are you moving internally at your BB to the IB division, or going to another firm to do IB? Would love to know how you managed to make this jump after a year of S&T.
