Canada PE SA
Looking for a list of Canadian private equity firms that hire for summers? MM/UMM/MF. Unsure about whether I should shoot for an MM PE role or an MM IB role considering IB globals are done. PE seems like a better shout. Any opinions are appreciated.
Well there isn't really MF in Canada, Brookfield takes but only converts for a few teams, don't think Onex takes at all. Altas doesn't hire people with the intention to convert to full-time. I can only really think of Novacap (rarely converts), Fengate and then the pensions CPP,OTPP, Omers Rotational. I'm sure there is some other spots, the buyside scene in Canada is extremely condensed and concentrated (not a ton of seats).
Have any of these processes for sa 2025 begun yet?
I think it’s too early considering the banks haven’t finished their recruiting process yet
In Canada, the closest thing to MF are Altas and Onex. Altas does summers, but gives no returns. There are also MM shops like Birch Hill, TorQuest, but interning there is uncommon. Torquest has taken people full-time though.
Pensions (CPP, OTPP, etc) probably have the most opportunities for internships and conversions to full-time in PE, however they often times focus on making fund investments or doing minority deals. I think OTPP is the largest pension that does more direct deals than otherwise.
How many interns does teachers take per term? And do they give FT return offers to off-cycle interns?
Conversion rates are significantly lower than banks, but there's a decent amount of analysts there that converted from a summer.
In addition to pensions (CPP, OMERS, OTPP, HOOPP, BCI), some firms that hire summers and convert include Imperial, Novacap, Beringer, Fengate PE, Whitehorse (or Dawson or whatever, also is PE secondaries) and a handful of firms in the LMM
All decent shops are done for SA24 so your bet is on off cycle and SA25. Here’s a few notable places and status:
- Novacap (unsure if they have their summer, but they have their off cycle done)
- Altas (will open apps for SA25 in the coming months)
- Instar (to open SA, however, they are big on returns)
- Torquest (No longer does SA)
- Banyan (To open)
- Imperial (To open I believe)
- Brookfield (Does not do SA)
- Whitehorse (To open)
Dawson*
