MM IB -> Family Office; Chances to get into traditional PE?
I'm a first year associate at a Family Office in the midwest started by two Entrepreneurs, which will eventually evolve into a multi-family office as the firm recruits other wealthy families. The founders exited a large tech biz and are worth ~$500M collectively. My job has so far been setting up infrastructure around the investment process, as well as doing direct investing in seed ($0.5M - $2.0M) and growth ($2M - $5M) investing. The founders also own 2-3 PCs that they started years ago, that haven't taken off. I help with ad-hoc Corp Dev and other projects with these companies as well.
I started my career in MM IB at a boutique on the west coast, I got some good transaction experience under my belt through 2 SS M&A transactions and a Private Placement, all in technology. I decided to go to the FO because I have a relationship with the founders through my alumni network, and I didn't break into traditional PE during my IB stint.
That all being said, I wanted some advice on traditional PE / growth equity funds. Does this prior experience give me a good chance to land a lateral PE Associate role now, or a Senior Associate / VP role in 2-3 years? I'm not unhappy with my current role, I've just always wanted a more institutional fund with set infrastructure and processes and didn't break-in during my IB stint as I mentioned above. Or am I overlooking the opportunity I'm currently at and should I just stay as the FO grows? Any advice welcome and thanks in advance.
