No Response to Thank you Email
I already had 2 phone conversations with this interviewer who's a principal at a PE fund. The first one was an introductory call (~20 minutes), and the second was more detailed (~70 / 75 minutes). After both phone calls, I received a response to my thank you email. My third interview was a case discussion with the same principal - that was done via video. It went well enough (I actually think I crushed it) that the principal said in the end that I did a good job and we need to meet in-person now. A day later I sent him a thank you email, but he didn't respond. It's been 2 business days since he hasn't responded. Since I am right now based far off from the interview and the prospective employer, I am wondering if I should consider the lack of interviewer's response to my email as a sign maybe they aren't as interested as they are letting me on? Is it weird that the interviewer did not respond to my third thank you email or am I overthinking this? I am desperate
Stop overthinking
When I had my super day, no one responded to my thank you emails except one person. When I got the offer, they later told me they aren’t allowed to contact me during the decision making period. So it seems the one guy who responded to my thank you email broke the rules.
Point is, it could be this reason or a thousand others. There is no reason to worry.
Hello, this firm is a small fund, so I don’t expect them to be bound by HR restrictions. Further, the guy with whom I have interviewed all 3 times is the one I am supposed to report to directly.
Do you obsessively analyze first date follow up too? Seriously, relax and stop torturing yourself. You'll know when it's time to follow up. You'll know when it's time to abandon hope. But either way your life will progress and you'll move on to the next thing.
I actually do Kill Myself over date follow ups. You have no idea how miserable this makes me, but I can’t help it. What do you think of my circumstances though - do you think I’m overthinking this? If he said that I did a good job at the end of the interview and made a good case, I don’t need to worry about him responding to my thank you email?
You are overthinking this thing wayyyyy too much. Maybe he's busy, maybe he's tired of responding to thank you's, maybe he's trying to get you an offer letter in response to your thank you. There are dozens of explanations. Worrying about it is not going to do you any good. Personally, I never respond to thank you's from potential candidates. While it may seem like a dick move, I do it for this exact reason. I don't want to set a precedent for my responsiveness. Hope you hear back soon and if not, maybe follow up next week.
On another note, if you want to stop torturing yourself like that I would advise some meditation and maybe thumbing through "Comfortable With Uncertainty" by Pema Chodron. I too used to be like that, to the point of being neurotic. It took a lot of mental training, but I'm finally to the point where I can let things go much more easily, and I'm much happier for it.
Exactly. No need to overthink things. From my own experience getting a response or not isn’t correlated with receiving an offer.

This is false and should be disregarded completely. Having done IB recruiting SA / lateral and PE, reading the tea leaves on your candidacy based on thank you notes is a sign of weakness and insecurity. Most people don't reply because it's more of a tick the box thing to receive a thank you email rather than starting an entire email chain. We have shit to do and are glad when we get thank you notes but whether we reply or not is dependent completely on other external factors.
FWIW my current Principal was the most responsive I've had to a thank you note as I met him every round of interviews and he always replied with something like "appreciate the note great speaking as well" or something of the sort and I got the offer. And I work at a pretty assholey place to be honest
Just don't want this mentality of getting a reply as being a bad thing vs good thing as that drops you far down a mental hole you don't need in your life.
I think that is really solid advice and much better than what I put.
In my experience, if somebody responds to a post interview thank you email, you did NOT get an offer. Take this as good news and keep grinding.
They don't respond (and sometimes they are not even allowed to give out their emails).
Well - this guy clearly responded to me the first two times lol
Maybe things got busy on his end, pretty sure he hasn't forgotten about you but life happens, just wait.
LET ME BE CLEAR - the reason why it's bothering me is may be the interviewer had a change in mind after our interview? I mean he did tell me that we need to meet in person when I am in the city next as this case presentation of mine has been good. So, I presumed that I am now in the final final stages.....When I followed up after the interview over email, I wrote along the lines of "Great to finally connect with you over video, enjoyed our convo. AS discussed, I will be in touch in a couple weeks and check your schedule as I plan my travel. I look fwd to meeting u in person". I mean I'd be flying to a diff country just to do this final interview (I presume that it'll be final), so don't want to be left hanging...I 'll be paying my own expenses, and I hope the firm better know that I am very keen on them...is it possible that interviewers can have change in heart?
If someone tells me a couple of weeks I'm likely not going to think about them at all for the next 7 - 10 days due to everything else I have going on. Yes, interviewers can change their minds, but you're jumping the gun a bit on the worry.
Any updates here?
