Private Equity in Dallas?
Anyone have any info on the PE environment in Dallas and some of the top shops in the area? I know NGP is a big one, but who else is in the area and how have they done recently? Where do DFW area firms tend to recruit from - BBs in NY/Houston or smaller Dallas-area firms? How should I best position myself if I'm at a BB outside of Dallas?
Thanks for any help

Anyone know who would be considered the top PE firms in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area? I know there are a lot of hedge funds in the area, but have not heard much in terms of PE. Prefer to hear of funds with over >$1B (if there are any).
Most notable would be Texas Pacific Group in Fort Worth, which is very well respected. I know there is a good one in Dallas called Natural Gas Partners with a few billion (somewhere between 3 and 8 I think) under management, which is energy focused.
I am not that familiar with many of them, but there are certainly a fair amount in Dallas of that size (though more hedge funds).
Does TPG still have groups in Texas? I thought they were all in NYC now.
Also, doesn't Fortress have some people in Texas?
HM Capital Partners (formerly Hicks, Muse, Tate, & Furst)
I think TPG's Ft. Worth office is all back-office stuff.
Lone Star Funds is one I know of. Somewhat FIG-focused.
Just talked to a friend who works at TPG. He said there is still some front office stuff in Fort Worth, but that a lot is in New York now, and that most of it was in San Francisco. In fact, when they changed their name from Texas Pacific Group to TPG Capital, it was because the San Francisco people "didn't like having Texas in their name".

My understanding is its legacy/original people in the front office. Is that right, jbc?
Lone Star Funds is really distressed asset focused. This happens to have played out to be real estate and financial institutions for them
Coulter and Price are in SF and the "front office stuff in Fort Worth" is probably Bonderman. It sounds like jbc, or maybe someone who's worked on one of their deals, knows better how it's organized. I'd be curious to know if some groups are in ny and some in SF, or whether there are people from a given group on both coasts.
Anyone know anything about Insight Equity? Rep/comp/lifestyle? I hear they have some Bain roots, fairly small, near Dallas?
hey guys, can anyone recommend any industry organizations or networking events for PE or other finance professionals in the dallas area?
