Stalling at VP and Exit Options

Does anyone have any data points on people who made it to VP at a fund but stalled there?

My LMM firm has discussed wanting to promote me soon, which I’m thrilled about, but I’m also trying to be realistic - at our size there aren’t a ton of carry dollars to go around nor is there a need for many more senior-level investors. We’re already pretty small, so options for moving downstream are limited.

Obviously the goal is successfully raise larger funds and grow within them, but pretend we can’t (or I get coached out for someone cheaper, or whatever) - what options are available to a VP who needs an exit? Are they as broad as they are for associates?

Everyone says that VP lateral is difficult but I see tons of opportunities out there in MM / LMM. It's only at the megafund level where I really see that as prohibitively difficult.

Also becoming a portco CFO / head of acquisitions is doable.

How is your ability to source deals? I view that as the most important factor to moving up at the VP level since presumably by the time you make it there you have deal execution already figured out.
