When should MBA Assoc. jump to PE?
For context, I attended a T20 MBA program and am currently an Associate at a BB in their Tech group. My end goal has always been to work in PE but didn't do IB after undergrad and figured I could use my MBA to break in.
I am a bit younger than my MBA peers (2.5 years of work experience prior to B-school)
If I want to work in PE, should I try to make the jump as early as possible (e.g. 1 year of banking)? Can I still recruit for PE Associate roles or are those reserved for Analysts?
If you really want to do PE then leave as soon as possible. IB really isn't similar to PE which means two things 1) you need the PE reps and 2) the older you get the more undesirable or pigeon holed in banking you become.
Begin recruiting the moment you have serious M&A deal experience you can speak to (hopefully 8-10 months) and plan to be out after 1 year. Any longer than that and things get dicey.
