Working for portfolio companies?

I’ve come to meet several people who work for PE-owned companies and seem to move from portco to portco for the same PE shop. For example, one guy headed up a portco for Shop A, Shop A sold the company, and the guy was installed as head for one of Shop A’s new portcos. Another guy I know worked in corp dev for a portco owned by Shop B, Shop B sold the company, and the guy moved to corp dev for one of Shop B’s new portcos. I’m aware of, though not acquainted with, several other people who have done the same thing.

Is this common? Do guys like these technically work for the PE shops or what’s going on here?

Apologies if the answer is obvious. Not super familiar with the world of PE and not close enough to these guys to ask.
