IB Analyst 1 Not Selected for H-1B Visa. How to Start Recruiting for Europe or Canada?
Analyst 1 at M&A boutique shop (~1 year with them). I'm originally from a European country and I came over to the U.S. for my studies on a scholarship(-ish). I was recruited by my current firm at graduation and they agreed to sponsor me for the H-1B lottery in 2022. I've been using my student visa to work up until now, but this will expire in summer this year.
Anyways, H-1B lottery results are in this week and I haven't been selected. I'll discuss options with my firm but I'm also going to be looking at IB roles back in Europe or Canada (my nationality gives me a slight edge when applying for visas in Canada).
My question is: how do I get on recruiters' radars for those kinds of opportunities (in Europe or Canada)?
My Linkedin is still showing me being in the U.S., so I get a fair amount of interest from U.S. recruiters but none for Europe opportunities whatsoever. Would appreciate it if anyone can point me to recruiters in Europe (specifically London) and Canada. Hell, you can show me the Pinpoint Partners of the U.K., I'll take anything.
I'll start networking and going ham, but I wanted to kick things off with recruiters flashing me opportunities in London, Toronto, etc., and feel out if my profile is competitive.
Canada recruiters: Vlaad & Co, Thorek Scott Partners
UK/Europe: Dartmouth, Arkesden
Thanks a ton! This helps me to fast track the process.
Have you spoken with them to see if they are either willing to transfer you to one of their other offices, or even let you get a 1-year master's and come back and work for them?
About to graduate and also didn't get selected for the H1B lottery this year. Very likely that I'll be in your shoes a year from now.
The firm is U.S.-only and frankly it's not worth it for me to spend money on a Master's (even cheap, online school) to come back. I'm probably better off trying to get an upgrade in another country or my home country.
Gotcha was just wondering cuz masters would give you 4 more tries plus if you had a guarantee of a job then that would have taken the risk out of the decision (even if you didn't get the H1B over the 4 tries, which is very unlikely, you would have made enough over 4 years to make up for the cost of the masters). But makes sense if you get an opportunity in your home country (especially if it is an upgrade). I am from a country that doesn't have a well-developed IB scene so the US is my best bet.
I just hate the uncertainty that comes with applying for H1B - it literally comes down to a luck of draw. US should develop a points system like so many other nations.
do you have STEM OPT?
I wasn't on a F-1 visa, I was actually on a different kind of visa. Sorry for being cryptic, I'm trying to avoid giving out too many details that could be identifiable (probably being paranoid).
This visa lasted one year after graduation so I could get some work experience in. But that means I only got 1 try at the H-1B.
Ahh no worries. Good luck!
