Appropriate Job Title to Put On Resume For A Long-Term Intern?
I graduated this past fall semester from a non-target and am applying to a few MSF programs to have another year to recruit for full-time IB roles after not securing anything and to rebrand myself.
I'm currently working on my resume for my applications and wanted to ask what title would be appropriate for me to use in my case:
I have been interning at a boutique IB since May, where I was given the title of "summer analyst" I worked hard, did an excellent job, and was given an extension for my final semester in college until May of this year. The firm consists of <10 senior bankers, outside advisors, and NO traditional analysts and associates. Deal flow is quite solid, consisting mainly of equity and debt capital raises.
I work 50-75 hours a week, and my seniors refer to me as their analyst whenever we talk to potential clients and investors. I have also been trusted with traditional IB tasks such as modeling, comps, deal sourcing, creating marketing material, and analyzing company material to reveal insights.
Not to sound like a noob/moron, but would it be appropriate for me to use the title "analyst" on my resume? Curious since I feel it would be a plus when MSF admissions view my application.
Thanks in advance guys!
Summer Analyst
Your title is intern, as that is what you were brought on as. Unless you feel confident that if you listed your self as an Analyst, all of your collogues would approve of this title, you are an intern.
Anyone checking the validity of your resume will check for the same three things: that you actually worked at the company, employment length, and position title. You want to know FOR CERTAIN that when multiple people call your employer (you have no clue who they will actually speak to as there is no HR department at a boutique) that every single person will validate your title.
I don't know how candid you are with the senior guys, but if I were you, I would voice your concerns. Something along the lines of, "Guys, I will be going through the MSF application process soon and I think it could potentially go a long way if I listed myself as an Analyst, would that be acceptable? I realize I was brought on as an intern but I have worked tirelessly for your team and think this could really make a material difference in me getting into some of the top programs"
Really good question, in Europe where off-cycle / long term internships are common we put "Off-Cycle Analyst". If that seems really weird for the US, then "Off-Cycle 6 month Analyst", "Off-Cycle Analyst Intern", or "Long Term Analyst Intern" should be good.
I used "full time intern" for a 40+ hr/wk internship that I did during my fall and spring semesters.
