IB Wannabe Resume Review

If you've got a minute, I'd really appreciate feedback on my resume. The harsher, the better. I want to know what other people (employers) would see as weaknesses, and how I might better spin my experience.

Background: Non-target, heading into my senior year, less than average GPA (doing my best to drag that up above a 3.5 before I graduate), some international experience.

Goals: Looking to land a full-time gig in IB, BB or elite boutique, but I'd go for a regional boutique too. Long term career goal is to do cross-border M&A.

Also, I have a question about how exact you're allowed to get on your resume. Most of the companies I'm working on now are large, but privately owned, so their financials aren't public. Obviously, you don't use names, but I would still feel a little sketchy putting "worked on structuring $20MM loan to $3billion company" on my resume. Thoughts?

couchy:

you mix serif and sans-serif. I hate that stuff..

I don't like using serif fonts for body text, especially if the body text is small (less than size 10). To me, it looks crowded, and sans-serif looks cleaner. But I don't like using sans-serif for headers, because large sans-serif fonts (larger than size 12) look blocky and...childish?

I also like distinguishing between headers and body font, but I know a lot of people prefer to stick with just one font. Should I change it? If so, to what?

couchy:

the general rule is sans serif for computer reading, serif for printed out reading

Good to know. So do people usually have two separate copies of their resume? Also, any thoughts on the content or how to better work the bullet points?

I like your resume but have some suggestions.

Firstly, I hate the be the guy that says try the M&I format but it really makes it easier to read and there are some nit-picky formatting things that will get cleared up if you use this format.

Second, it is very wordy and the font is really small so I would clear up some space by: - reducing the number of words per bullet point - maybe by splitting them up or making them more concise. - I don't think it is standard protocol to list your references, so delete them. - Consider cutting most of the housing services job (especially the Front desk position) and expand your other jobs which should be the main focus of your resume as they are much more impressive.

These changes will make it easier to read - remember the fact that most people spend only a few seconds looking at your resume so you need to show them want is important as soon as possible.

Thirdly, I don't think the "Additional employment" section is needed - you have some relevant work experience listed so telling them you were a barista won't make you more employable. I think this could be replaced by a "technical skills" and "interests" section. But when in doubt, leave it out because you want to be concise and throwing in everything but the kitchen sink just distracts - as an undergrad you aren't expected to be able to fill a page of awesome experience.

Hope this helps.

Really helps! Thanks for the feedback man, I appreciate it. I think I am gonna transfer to the M&I template, I wanted to like, show initiative and make my own, but I think it might just be better to have something standard.

And I think you're right, I'll definitely emphasize the first two experiences, take out the references, and maybe add some interests.

Thanks again!

Dont mean to sound like a douche but i would take a glance at it and move on. Something about the font and theres not enough white space...too much clutter. Think this is your first step...clean it up a little some how. On first pass looks like you have some pretty good experience though.

This is a good resume.

The issue is everything's so cluttered. Space it out, consider a different font, and summarize your points a bit more clearly. Think of the impact you made and let that be the main focus of all of your bullet points.
