Some of the comments on this forum have been quite insightful. Could I have a shot at a good VC firm in few years with the following path: MBA from NYC focused schools like CBS/Stern and then 2-3 years in Investment Banking (something like technology group). Maybe also do internships at NYC based startups while at school. Could this open up VC options if I network well? Thanks.

Engineering background is cool; Lots of school like the STEM types unless you're in the oversubscribed minority groups. first of all, VC & PE often take people with IB/HF experiences, because they really don't recruit much as entry IB analysts. Second, VC has many fields. if you want technology VC, I think Stanford GSB and berkeley Haas will offer a decent shot. Next in line shall be UCLA, USC in california. But for other types, you'll have to look into specific school's knowledge.

I suggest to either use your Engr background (California area) or go to the best MBA Finance school (Wharton, Booth, MIT, etc etc)

Thanks. Maybe I was not very clear. Although I have an engineering degree and a quantitative finance masters I have not worked in engineering field, mostly finance for ~5 years. By school I meant start-up intnernship while at business school (in Fall, Spring semester). Due to personal reasons business school in California is not an option at the moment.
