Can I get into a boutique IB firm without being in a target school?
I know that recently some of the bulge bracket banks have been taking applicants from typically non target schools and I am curious if the boutique firms are doing the same. I am a freshman at the University of Vermont studying finance and I have been interested in Investment Banking since high school but I am worried I won't be able to get an internship at one of these top boutiques because of the school that I go to. I do a ton of extracurriculars and I get good grades but I worry it won't be enough. I have heard that some of these firms are known for throwing out apps for not having the right school name on it so what should I be doing to make myself stand out and give me a chance at getting a spot at one of these top boutique banks? In particular, I am curious about CVP's recruiting and if there's anything that I should know about their internship application process. Anything helps. Thanks.
Ah, the age-old tale of David versus the Goliath of target schools, right? Well, based on the most helpful WSO content, I've got some good news for you. It's definitely possible to break into boutique investment banking firms without being from a target school. Here's a bunch of bananas... I mean, tips, to help you stand out:
Networking: This is your golden ticket. Based on previous WSO threads, networking is crucial. You mentioned knowing someone who knows a few people in boutique investment banks. Use that connection! Reach out and express your interest in learning more about the industry. Informational interviews are a great way to start building relationships.
Internships: Gain relevant experience through internships, even if they're not at top boutiques. This shows initiative and a genuine interest in the field. Based on the WSO Dataset, internships in related fields like boutique restructuring consulting or Big 4's capital markets group can be stepping stones.
Extracurriculars and Grades: Keep up the good work with your extracurriculars and grades. They do matter and can help differentiate you from the pack.
Skill Development: Learn the technical skills required for the job. The WSO Investment Banking Prep can be a great resource for this. Being able to talk shop during interviews or networking events can give you an edge.
Persistence: It's a marathon, not a sprint. Keep at it, and don't be discouraged by rejections. It's all part of the process.
Regarding CVP's (Centerview Partners, I presume?) recruiting, I don't have specific details on their internship application process. However, boutique banks often value direct outreach and networking, so try to connect with alumni or professionals working there to get the inside scoop.
Remember, it's not just about the name of your school but the hustle in your step. Keep swinging through those finance vines, and you'll find your spot in the jungle of investment banking. Good luck!
