Non-target recruiting stats
I'm assuming it's still somewhat possible to get decent placement from a non-target undergrad university even without prevalent on-campus recruiting (by using student clubs, ECs, networking ass off, killer GPA). Does anyone have stats on how well non targets do in the IB field? Better yet, a ranking of said non-targets (best of the worst)?
What is general street thought on non-targets? Will firms really toss resumes away if from non-targets, or cannon-target students be sometimes seen as more underrated/better than targets due to lack of opportunity and extra determination/push? Ty in advance

There are far more non-target / non-core schools than target schools. There’s no point in ranking true non-targets because none are particularly helpful for the student and breaking in will be entirely dependent on personal networking and strong interview preparation. If the school is helpful, it’s a low semi-target.
Makes sense thank you
Would have to agree with more non-target than target but would include that target kids most likely have a lot easier path to get in. A lot of the non-target have indicated our bank doesn’t even recruit at their institution so they had to either network, get lucky applying on website or have a gpa/story that is stronger than target kids.
At the end of the day, going to target will make your life easier but that sort of makes sense since the majority of kids at target are harder workers and have better grades than those that attend non-targets.
From reading around, it looks like the OCR from targets is worth the hassle of a transfer. I've been seeing most kids at/from targets show much less interest (and demonstrate less knowledge) in pursuing high finance while still getting tons of opportunities, though.
Are you diverse? If so, that’s pretty much on par with going to a target
Not particularly.... Is it really that much of a leg up? Hoped it was a half-joke at worst.
No, it gives you extreme advantage, especially if you are a female. I would even argue that if you could pick between becoming a target or female (and non target) you would be better off as a female. This is especially true if you exclude tier 1 BBs/EBs who get a fair amount of target female applicants.
I have seen so many unbelievable horror stories first and second hand.
Maybe a college transfer isn't the right kind of transition I should be looking at.... On a serious note tho that's insane. Is this across the board or just at your bank? As of rn I rly don't like the idea of banks discriminating positively based on any diversity metrics. Maybe I can milk the fact that I wasn't born in the States or something.
Seconding this as a diverse non-target - I saw my non diverse peers send literally thousands of networking emails, grind technicals for hours on end, have endless coffee chats etc just to get no/few offers, while sorority girls who couldn’t even walk through a dcf got BB offers. It’s really crazy.
Crushing. Why oh why didn't I choose to be born diverse
Whats the average pool size for non-targets at banks? Heard it's typically 10% of SA class. Anyone able to speak on that?
