Odds of Getting Into UK MFins From US School
Hi - I'm a European international student currently studying in the US and have been interested in pursuing an MFin in the UK. I would love to know the odds of my chances of getting into the UK's top (LSE,LBS, Imperial, Oxbridge) MFin programs given my qualifications/background along with any info anybody may have!
My background:
-
Top 40 but nontarget school, STEM major (computer/data science, stats, math type) with a 3.5 GPA
-
2 IB summer internships (regional boutiques) + senior positions at school's investment club
-
Passed SIE (idk how much this matters in the UK)
-
Projected ~710 on GMAT
Looking to enter in the fall of 2025, so any info would be great. Thanks!
Based on the most helpful WSO content, your background and qualifications present a solid foundation for applying to top Master in Finance (MFin) programs in the UK, such as those offered by LSE, LBS, Imperial College, and Oxbridge. Here's a breakdown of how your profile aligns with the typical requirements and expectations of these prestigious institutions:
Academic Background: Your STEM major is highly relevant and sought after for MFin programs, especially given the increasing importance of data science and quantitative skills in finance. A 3.5 GPA from a top 40 U.S. school demonstrates strong academic performance, although competition for these programs can be fierce, and applicants often come from a wide range of top universities globally.
Work Experience: Having two investment banking internships, even if they are with regional boutiques, is valuable. It shows practical experience in the finance sector, which is a significant plus. Your senior positions in your school's investment club further demonstrate your leadership skills and deep interest in finance.
Standardized Tests: A projected GMAT score of ~710 is competitive for these programs. The GMAT is a critical component of the application process, and a score in this range can strengthen your application, especially for LBS, which places a considerable emphasis on the GMAT.
Additional Qualifications: While the SIE (Securities Industry Essentials Exam) might not be directly relevant in the UK as it is in the U.S., it still shows your commitment to the finance profession and your proactive approach to acquiring industry knowledge.
For the fall of 2025 entry, you have time to further bolster your application. Consider the following strategies:
Network: Engage with alumni and current students of these programs. This can provide you with insights into the application process and potentially strengthen your application through referrals or advice.
Extracurriculars and Leadership: Continue to take on leadership roles and participate in extracurricular activities related to finance. This can further demonstrate your passion for the field.
Research and Tailor Applications: Each program has its unique strengths and focuses. Tailor your application to highlight how your background, interests, and career goals align with each program's offerings.
Recommendations: Secure strong letters of recommendation, preferably from professionals in the finance industry who can vouch for your skills and potential.
In summary, your profile is competitive for the top MFin programs in the UK. Focus on strengthening your application further and tailoring it to each program's specific requirements and culture. Good luck!

Decent profile.
Can you get your GPA up? If I understand correctly, 3.5 GPA translates roughly to ~65-66%. So a mid 2:1, which is not that great.
WE is good
ECs? And unique activities?
I would also say that it’s nice to project your GMAT to be ~ 710 (is this old scale or focus??), but is it backed up by anything? Have you taken a mock under exam conditions yet?
Because that will be the most important deciding factor.
Focus on your GMAT, getting your GPA up (if possible) and essays. If you hit a good level on all three of these, you should have fairly good chances.
