Is accepting a Trading role at a Fixed Income asset management firm a dead-end role if I leave the firm eventually?

The role is execution-based but the firm likes to recruit PMs from both research and trading.

The PM I interviewed with was a Trader himself, two of the Research analysts were traders and two of the other PMs came from Research. The PM said I can move into Research in 3-5 years time if I wanted to.

Yet I browse various forums and people say it's pretty much a dead-end role which has me incredibly confused. Is my firm pretty unusual?

I'm just worried that most fixed income shops aren't like mine and if I accept and happen to leave the firm, I'll be stuck.
