S&T in Asia from UK semi/target?
Is it possible for someone coming from a UK semi/target (think Warwick/UCL/Durham) to start in Asia?
A few questions, any answers would be very appreciated:
- Does language matter? Assuming i'm an english only speaker, is it still true that english only is fine for s&t in Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo etc.? Or is that a thing of the past?
- What weight do such aforementioned schools hold in APAC? Are they looked at as just another foreign degree or do they hold weight?
- I'm not a local of any asian country and am not of asian descent (white, UK/US/CA/EU citizen etc). Might sound silly but- am I at a significant disadvantage, assuming no language barrier?
- Hours?
- Comp?
- SA for recruiting timeline/process vs. US/UK- any info would be appreciated
- Are Msc programs in Asia a thing (HKUST, HKU, NUS, SMU etc)? If so, which programs are desired?
Any response to these questions is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Easier to internal transfer to the region. The recruiting pool for junior traders is pretty broad and there isn't much reason to bring in expats when there is plenty of local talent (the gov won't like it either, especially in SG). Can't think of any junior traders at my BB in HK that is fresh grad expat.
Got it, thanks. In terms of internally transferring, have u seen this to be at all common/possible? Or is it still a significant uphill battle?
Don't know much about landscape in SnT. Only considering my friends, English only speaker is totally okay to work in SnT cuz one of my friends is a native Indian and got the SA offer from a BB with one of the highest pay on the street.
What was his background (school etc)
She's a native Indian and attends one of HK top 3 schools (a relatively weaker one especially in IB and SnT), has some experience in broad finance fields (Corporate banking, business analysis, and big 4) but no direct Snt or IBD exposure. Can assure she has no Chinese language skills at all.
just say u go to Durham lol
Did you watch the Rogue Trader?

I will try and be as helpful as possible - I will be joining a BB S&T business in HK this summer.
1. I do not speak Mandarin, and I think it may be a perk but I still had a couple of superdays without it so I don't think it's the end of the world. I can think of 2-4 other people in my analyst class who are in a similar position, though we are probably more international than other comparable classes.
2. Hard for me to say, I went to a US school, but I still think you have a reasonable shot.
3. I am Asian-ish, but not necessarily South-East Asian. A couple of people in my analyst class fit your descriptions, so no I wouldn't say it's a significant disadvantage.
4. Seem alright, can get long-ish depending on product, though still likely better than IB.
5. Base is 700-800k HKD.
6. Timeline runs a little later, I had interviews in September through November, as opposed to April to August in the US.
7. No idea sorry
Ik it's tough, but I wish you luck. Sometimes I feel like I got lucky.
