A move to a trading seat isn't going to happen, a move to Risk/TA is possible...
Would a move to one of these positions be a realistic path to have a chance at being a trader?
It's more of a necessary path. The physical trading world is so different to trading derivs at a bank owing to the whole operations side of the biz so either Risk/TA->Ops->Jr. Trader would be the path. Likely time frame from start to end would be min. 5 years realistically.
Do you think commodity trading is a better start than IBD? THX!
This is a cliche: best way is ops and then trader. The downside of this route is you only learn about how one company works and never get market facing info
