Unusual hobbies under “Interests” on a resume
Just curious what you guys feel is appropriate for the *Interests *section of a resume. For example, I started juggling when I was a kid and have put a lot of hours into the hobby yet I never put it on my resume. I don’t know if recruiters would find it intriguing or see it as frivolous and useless. Additionally, I like to read trading-related books and love learning about derivatives but I’m not sure if including that as an interest is necessary considering I have relevant experience.
How much do you think about how your interests will be perceived before including them on a resume? I’m probably overthinking this but it’d be interesting to hear everyone’s thoughts. I have talked about sports in interviews and I definitely think it helped get me my first internship, but a lot of people out there have “weird” hobbies which could be riskier to mention.
Interests become really important in your interviews. When I was recruiting my first few phone screens ended up being about interests I had on my resume. When interviewers pick up on an interesting interest and start a conversation it can be great
Don’t add anything you couldn’t talk about for 30 minutes (to be safe). Examples include teams you follow, sports you play, book or tv series you are very into (GoT pops up all the time), hobbies like horseback riding / flying / MMA, art, etc...
.
To each their own. I would say the more you try to “impress” someone with your interests the weaker the effect, but I do see how GoT can be so common you won’t stand out. I have 5 and they either relate to what I think is a cool hobby / activity, non-finance skills (like multilingual), plus interests (big science nerd)
