2013 grad looking for advice
Some background. Semi-target (mostly regional placements) undergrad 2013. Finance major. >3.8 gpa. Cum laude. F'ed around and did not take recruiting seriously. Currently working at small cpa firm considering inserting pencil into eye. I'd like to get into ER, S&T, or real estate finance. Took one class where I wrote an ER report for a REIT.
Options:
1) Network hard
2) CFA
3) msf at top school
4) combo of all 3
5) b*tch out, get cpa, take over this small practice
Advice much appreciated.
Met a couple of guys in your situation before. Went to targets and either didn't do recruiting or didn't have any jobs that mattered (i.e. lifeguarding, retail). One guy I know ended up at a low tier research shop solely because he went the target school and had a decent GPA, but started networking and within 2 years was in a research role at decent buy-side shop. You have a strong GPA and a relevant major so don't give up.
Find ways to spin your CPA experience and use your entire network. Depending on what type of accounting background you have, ER and Real Estate finance are within reach. Just gotta hustle.
Network regardless of what happens. If I were in your situation, I'd probably do an MSF, because you have a great GPA and great school. You'll probably land a decent problem, and if you can line up a good internship, you'll place well after graduation.
